I like food -- what do I do about it? A new endo, too.

Some good, some not so good.

I think I have found my new endo. After some frustrations with Joslin and the difficulties of getting up to Boston on a regular basis to see everyone, I switched to Naomi Berrie up at Columbia. Perhaps my view is skewed by an unexpectedly good a1c -- my last ones had been mid 8s and I expected something in the 9s, but came in at 7.5. Not as good as many of you, but pretty much in line with my history. It's kind of frustrating to hear about people who are always 6 or… Continue

I've Got the Morning Time Blues

Can't you imagine B.B. King wailing away something like that on Lucile?

Anyway, several weeks ago, I did a basal test to confirm what the sensor was telling me -- big time morning effect. Going up 100 points in the morning, without eating. So, I increased my early basal to try to fix that, and it helped. For a while.

A few days ago, I did another moring basal test, and confirmed again that I am still going up in the morning. So, of course, the natural thing to do is increase the basal some mor… Continue

Random Thoughts

Morning effects: Several weeks ago, I noticed my BGs rapidly rising in the mornings, so I increased my basal, and that worked for a while. This morning, I started at 6:15 at 90. By 9 am, I was 193, and the only things I had eaten were two small pieces of cereal that fell out of my daughter's bowl (yes, it was Trix, but it was only two small pieces, so should that have caused a rise of 100+ points? After a Zone shake for breakfast, I'm at 253 two hours later (yes, only a rise of 60 points, but sh… Continue

Mornings Drive Me Nuts!!!!

A rant on the joys of the dawn effect:

I've always had to deal with the dawn effect -- BG climbing shortly after I wake up in the morning, regardless of food. For example, this morning (a fairly typical one), I woke, around 6:30, with BG at 97. A good start to the day. By the time I got to work and was ready for breakfast around 9, I was 237. I had not eaten anything. I had not exercised, but I had been puttering around the apartment. Of course, I corrected with breakfast and was down to the 18… Continue

Struggles and Hopes

My last couple of a1cs have not been great, and my finger stick tests since the last a1c have not been too good either. I know why -- not eating right (I like a glass, or two, of sherry in the evening, and that just raises the BG overnight) and bolusing right.

I went back on the CGM after a couple of months off of it and suddenly had a great day -- no BG's over 150, and never low a single time. Now I just have to get more sensors -- this was my last one, and it came out prematurely. I stopped b… Continue

Jonathan...

I am interested in your comment about people on the forums being interested in what they're teaching us in med school.

I'll try to post something this weekend about our coursework.

Is there anything specifically you'd like to know or are you just looking for a general post?

Thank you very much for your reply on my forum post!

Thanks for the travel tips. I have flown plenty before. Usually from EWR I spent the first 37 years of my life in N.J. and within the last 6 months I got married relocated to St. Louis (where my wife is from) bought a house and was diagnosed toward end of July. It was all overwhelming but 3 months later I am doing great thanks to some of the tips here. Some were yours and I wanted to say thanks.

Hi Jonathan, I wrote on your discussion about Lows at meal time, and forgot to go check if anyone said something about my comments. I see that you asked what is the nutritional scale I use, it is the Salter 1440, it comes with a pouch, the precision is 1 gram of food weight and has a database of 1,440 different kinds of food in it (you can click to see it here. We have a Minimed Travel Tot (a bag that we can put the scale, his stuff and 2 meters and it closes!).

I find it really useful! Hope this helps!
