Biomedical Researcher
When my son, Griffin (now 3), was diagnosed with T1 at 18 months, I was devastated. I had seen ten years of T1 complications in my mil who died at age 53. I knew intellectually That treatment for T1 is better now than it was then, but it really felt like an emotional kick in the teeth. It was a very bad year for our family, since the company that my husband worked for closed up shop 3 days before Griffin's diagnosis.

I work full-time as an immunology researcher, though not directly with diabetes.

We're getting an Australian Labradoodle puppy to train as a Diabetes Alert dog. He/she is due to arrive on December 19th!

Our new puppy!

Our breeder just did her final round of temperament testing and after 9 months of planning, our new puppy will be arriving on Tuesday! We will be training Tessie to be Griffin's diabetes alert dog. I'll keep you all updated on Tessie's progress!

Back from vacation!

Having a toddler with D presents unique problems and stresses, so after 2+ years in that club we were in need of a break from reality. The Disney Cruise seemed like it would be a good fit for us. There would be plenty of kid-friendly entertainment and perhaps my husband and I would have a chance to leave Griffin (3) in children's programming, knowing that if needed to they could page us and we could be there within 5 minutes. Griffin did not spend a huge amount of time in Children's programming,… Continue

Numbers, numbers, numbers

I try not to let the "bad" numbers get me down, but I was pretty bouyed by Griffin's numbers this past week. No readings above 270 and 65% in range! That probably doesn't sound great to you D adults, but I'm ecstatic! Now, I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. Griffin has an endo appointment on 8/10 and we invariably have some sort of major BG snafu in the week before his appointment (sigh).

Sad Day

I'm taking my dog, Pippin, a 13.5 yo basenji to the vet today to be put down. He is in kidney failure and hasn't kept anything down for 3 days. He's now refusing to eat. My husband wants to let nature take it's course, but I don't want Pippin to suffer (and he's obviously suffering now) AND I don't want my 9 year old to wake up with Pippin dead in bed with him!

Here's a photo of Pippin and Cooper in happier days.

Settling in...

tudiabetes seems to be a very comfortable spot. Thanks, Manny for setting it up.

My mother is here, helping out for the summer. When I was 20, the thought of having my mother stay with me for 8 weeks would have completely depressed me. Well, here I am, the mom of a diabetic toddler and sooo grateful for the help. Who cares if she throws out half of my worldly possessions while she's here. Peter and I actually went out to see a movie on Saturday!

Peter's family is close by and very knowledgable… Continue

I wish I could get a puppy while I have this dog but she is a bully to other dogs. When my dog was about 4 lbs she bit a dog the size of an adult shephard on the nose. She is now 7 lbs. She is also very old and is on heart medicine. The vet has told us that she needs lead a stress free life. A new puppy right now would not be a good idea.

Hi Kirsten, I have a question for you, my daughter (11) uses the pod & we use a large tegaderm over the entire pod. I'm interested in using just a strip at the catheter end like you mentioned. Is the mastisol difficult to get off at pod change time? Also, when you use mastisol & the tegaderm strip like you mentioned, does your son ever have the problem of hitting the pod enough so that the pod itself separates from the fabric underneath?? We had this problem which is why we went with the full size tegaderm. Thanks for any help.

Actually, all that happened was that the total number of recent blog posts displayed on the home page was reduced from 5 to 3, as part of the measures taken last night to help speed up the site, as explained here:
http://tudiabetes.com/forum/topic/show?id=583967%3ATopic%3A18333

The 3 posts are still on the home page: they just got moved to the middle column, closer to the bottom, which ended up being a necessary move to "balance" the boxes in the home page a bit.

Let me know if this addresses your concern. If not, I will be glad to look for alternatives.
