My son had an appointment with his eye specialist yesterday for a check-up on his retinopathy. His vision in the only eye he can see showed signs of slipping. This made my son a little nervous as did I. The doctor did a dye test which showed thickening of his retina. Doctor's recommendations are that he have some laser treatment to start then maybe some surgery to remove scar tissue.
As a mother I hope this doesn't mean he may lose his sight in that eye also.
I will be saying prayers for sure.

Karen,

I happened upon your post about your son struggling with depression and bipolar. His story is a lot like mine. I thought I only suffered from depression until one day I tried to take my life. After a successful 14 day treatment program, I was properly diagnosed with bipolar disorder. That was almost 3 years ago. I can honestly say that I don't know who that person was before treatment. For you as a caregiver, all I can say is love him unconditionally. Don't you ever feel like this is your fault. This is about him and his demons/issues. I say this because my mother was not there for me. She thought it was her fault. She made it all about her. With depression/bp comes feelings of insecurity and inadequacy. He may feel like he's not lived up to certain expectations. Trust me, that's the depression talking. The thing with bp is our reactions to everyday situations get clouded by our brain telling us that people are attacking us. Someone with bp that is in a "cycle" lives in a ficticious reality.

I could go on for hours, but I'll stop for now. Please consider this a helping hand reaching out to you and your son. Write me any time you need to talk.

I went with my son to his doctor's appointment the other day and was very happy with the outcome. My son has been trying to make some changes in his diet for the better. Making better choices. I think he is finally realizing after losing sight in one eye the importance of taking care of his diabetes. His A1c level was the same as last. Which is a good thing. My son also expressed that he would like it to be even lower to a 7.5. Currently in the low 200 range. He knows he still has work to do. He was so happy at the doctor's visit. It was so good for me a mother to finally see this in my son. Maybe there's another milestone happening here. I just wanted to share some good news.
