Hi Paul, the short answer is yes. Those spikes are bad. Even if your levels go back to normal relatively quick, a normal person would never reach 12mmol/l after eating, even if they ate all the sugar in the world. The spikes in blood sugar can dam...

I bet the study says something like 'There was a slight correlation between nutrition during pregnancy and t1. We don't know why, further studies are needed' and then the media reports on it and it becomes 'Eating your veggies will prevent your ch...

I would love to see them do the conga, lol. My doctor has a poster with a graph of the monthly average of all her patients. It goes back a few years. It's usually between 7 and 8. I do my best to keep it lower, but it seems I'm outnumbered.

One of those days

My BG has been very stable for the last few days, so I guess someone felt the need to remind me just how unpredictable this disease can be. I'm sure you've all been there.

I wake up with a slight 'uh oh' feeling and sure enough my BG is 2,9 (52). Since it came down slowly during the night (time to lower my Lantus a bit) I didn't feel as bad as I normally do and the bit of milk I put in my morning tea immediately fixed that. I'm very carb sensitive and very rarely need more than 5g of fast actin… Continue

good news

I went to see my new endo today and my new A1c is 6,3! I'm surprised it's this good, because I saw some pretty ugly numbers during Christmas (not because of the food, but because of all the sitting around and doing nothing) and my recent cold. But that means there is still some room for improvement and I might manage something below 6,0 the next time.

And I noticed something really neat at the endo's office. She has a huge chart on the wall that shows the monthly average of all her patients A1c… Continue

Some thoughts on my life with diabetes

I had a conversation with a friend yesterday that made me think. We haven't talked in a while, so I never got around to tell her about my diagnosis, but I was pretty sure she already knew through mutual friends. People talk and that is fine by me, I don't keep my diabetes a secret. Any attempt would be futile at best, because it's such an integral part of my everyday life.

Anyway, the conversation went something like this: 'I don't know if you've heard...' 'Yes, could it be you're sick?'

And I… Continue

That picture up there is beautiful. I just wanted to ask you about the glucometers having a 20% margin of error. Is this across the board for all meters ?

I like to use PowerBar gel, mainly because it has electrolytes plus carbs (27g a little high for most folks). It's easy to take a little at a time when exercising though It also comes in different flavors.

Have you read the poem "Trees" by Joyce Kilmer, a poet killed in Europe the latter part of WWI. I learned this poem in 7th grade and it always stuck with me.

Hi, thanks for the add. I agree, it does help to talk to others with diabetes about numbers and such. Did you take the photo on your page?
