Lauren - Correction - did not realize that :-) Yes, agree - no reason at all to tell the average Joe studies etc. I find these latest studies interesting since more than one (4 I believe) have come up with the same thing. From 3 different countrie...

Lauren - The water of who is what is so muddy. You might find this interesting... "Although most patients with type 1 diabetes are autoantibody-positive, ethnicity confers notable differences and may make confirmation of type 1 diabetes more di...

You have some good valid points. I just see the original posters idea like opening up a hornets nest. Even the meer mention of T2 to most people makes them go running for the protection of 'I've been tested, I'm fine, or the It's not in my family ...

All I can say is that is very hard to explain and I wish you the best if you venture into this. I don't even know what to tell people when it comes to my own condition - let alone try to give a speach to someone about diabetes. For me...do I just ...

Way too funny!!! I always thought it was strange that my FIL watched Food Network quite a bit since his diagnosis. Now...humm....I watch it too!!! There is something to this theory. Guess if I can't have it I would rather learn the science of it (...

Kristen - Thank you so much for the information!! I'll get that book. I find it all so interesting and I see so many things that don't quite add up to a quick and simple diagnosis. I think there are many others like myself but they don't research ...

It kind of does matter. My niece is Type 1, 12 and her TDD is 40 to 50 units a day. She does not have to watch her weight. A low carb diet won't help her. The antibodies that attacked her pancreas have also attacked her thryroid. Those same antibo...

You forgot to mention the deficiency in the alpha cells, which secrete glucagon. I consider this as necessary to blood sugar control as insulin. If her alpha cells were still secreting glucagon, no more low blood sugars due to excess of insulin.

Thank you for the welcome everyone!! I'm not totally 'new' to this diabetes game. I fainted 3 years ago was taken to the ER and was hydrated and released. No glucose was ever tested - you see...at the time I didn't have any known cases of diabetes in my family and I don't fit the T2 'look'. Forward 8+ months and I was really sick. I believe I had a seizure in the middle of the night that my cat woke me out of. I went to the bathroom and looked in the mirror - I was gray. This very same cat was diagnosed diabetic 6 weeks prior - as a joke I tested with her meter. The joke was on me! The meter read 220. I tested again in disbelief but it was correct. I've been diagnosed diabetic and undiagnosed (5 or so times total) since antibiotics brought my FSB numbers down. Finally got into an endo and diagnosed again per the OGTT. She discovered I am insulin sensitive (she did insulin levels during the OGTT). T1 testing for antibodies came out neg. (GAD65 was .2) Also I don't have high BP or high triglycerides. I am missing my first phase response. With the OGTT after I drink the solution my teeth chatter and I shake and go up fast - on the 3rd hour I shoot back down to normal (100). Before this my brother was diagnosed T2 (typical metabolic issues high BP, high triglycerides). So the endo in March of this year declared me T2. My C-peptide is 1.7 (range .8 to 3.1). My fasting is normal again (was only elevated when I was sick and a few months after in pre-zone). But I have trouble eating. So...I come to find out per a paper that was published April '08 my psoriasis which I have had since age 16 and also I have the TSI's for Graves' but no Graves' well it's all linked to T1. Upon reading a diabetes manual I found out I could still be LADA since I have this genetic fault. Thus is why I say who knows what type. I eat practically grass to stay where I am at!! Kind of tired of it all. I know my endo is looking for a T1 connection. I told her about my great grandfather having vitiligo (sp?) and she perked right up and wanted to know if he had T1. That was a no. Right now my thyroid is going hypo without TPO's. Endo finds this odd. So do I !!! But all and all I'm ok :-)
New info....I'm DQ8 A1*03 B1*0302 and a Celiac. Doing much better on a gluten free diet. Right now holding steady and doing ok.
New labs (June 09) It appears that my TSH is in a better range since going gluten free!! In 3 months it will be checked again - hope this remains true! On the bad...my A1c went up so I upped my Met. Huh on that...my lipids look great (which were never bad) . Wish I could figure out why I'm becoming more diabetic!!!!!!!

just wanted to let you know that I'm not some angry, lash out and hate on people type of person. I think you misread my discussion, or took it as a personal attack against you when I was referring to generalizations about Type 2 diabetics that people often apply to Type 1's. have a good one!

Kathy

I read your post on the markers that identify for T1 and T2, and I fascinated. I do testing for CRP for a COPD research study, and I never considered these markers in relation to my own disease! It almost makes me want to throw my own plasma on the next luminex I run! I've also been doing a lot of HLA markers testing lately... you've given me a lot to think about! thanks for being so informative!

Wow! What a challenge all this must be. And I thought I was odd. I was diagnosed with Type 1 at 38 and not family history of diabetes ( not even Type 2 ).

Keep your chin up. The doctors will figure it out soon enough and then you'll figure out what to do.

Hi Kathy. Ask your doctor to do a test that will determine what Type of diabetes you have. It matters.
