I am a T2, I usually eat 2-3 servings of fruits each day, but usually blueberries, strawberries, tomatoes or apples. I eat them with walnuts or hazelnuts plus a fiber mix called Superseed and it doesn't raise my BG as much as say eating fruits alo...

I treat myself to low carb ice cream bars (Breyer's low carb ice cream bars are only 5g CHO per bar) or iced coffee's (sugar-less, I never liked sugary coffee's) a few times a week. For bigger treats, I buy myself beauty products, I am a huge skin...

Agreed - I recently filled out a diabetes questionnaire at the hospital and got 2 points. According to the score sheet, if you score between 3-9 you have low risk. I just don't think weight should be relied upon as a factor.

Rice. I guess it's the most basic & common food group for Asians, like bread for Americans except there are no low carb rice substitutes so I have eliminated it completely from my diet. I miss it =(

Advocate Redi-Code Meters?

Does anyone use Advocate Redi-Code meters? This third party vendor that deals with my insurance company sent it to me (and billed the insurance company a whopping $500 for the meter and 90-day supply of strips with lancets!) so I've been using it for a few months. I have no idea if th… Continue

Direct Lab Tests

Hi, just curious if anyone here has ever used a direct lab service (without going through your insurance company or doctor, no co-pay but just pay out of pocket) to test their C-peptide/GAD or other tests that your primary doctor wouldn't order for you?

I've been recently diagnosed as T2, but reading this tudiabetes website makes me wonder if I'm T1.5/LADA instead or I guess I just want a peace of mind that I really am T2 and that I'm doing all I can right now by eating right, exercising vigoro… Continue

Metformin? Or Just Diet/Exercise for the Newly Diagnosed . . .

I've been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about a month ago. I am 33 years old, with a BMI of 20, total cholesterol 174, triglycerides 77, HDL 60 & LDL 99. All my life, I have eaten lots of vegetables, fruits, grains, and have been taking vitamins for the past 3 years. Granted, I love carbs (grains, bread, fruits, vegetables), so I am practically a vegan, as I've always hated red meat. My father was diagnosed with diabetes at 45. He was severely underweight (BMI 19). So I guess I've been gene… Continue

Yes, I struggled with lots of diet and exercise until I discovered from an obscure little website that fruits were the missing part of the puzzle. Apparently, insulin resistance is more than just fat buildup in the cell wall. The cell's permeability is also affected by the lack of certain nutrients... most notably potassium. Once I got my daily potassium levels above 2000mg, things changed in a hurry. Now, I eat a banana a day, plus almonds and whatever else I can find in the way of healthy, nutrient rich, natural foods. I've been off Metformin for over a year. Yesterday, I measured 81 two hours after lunch.

Hey Kat,

Boy I know the feeling on the one bowl of rice thing! Although... I don't think it takes me quite that long to go back down. Have you talked to your doc about doing something besides Metformin? I've only been on Lantus a few days, but I'm already seeing a difference, especially in the mornings.

Have you looked into c-peptides and/or seeing an endocrinologist? My doc is great, he knows a lot... but the endo blew me away with how much more he knew.

But I hear you... the food thing gets to me too... I just keep telling myself that there's lots of diabetics out there who can eat whatever they want, as long as they balance and don't go overboard. It's only a matter of finding the right meds/diet/exercise to get there.

Well I'm heavy carb eater and mostly whole grain. I tried the med but got allergic reaction and got on the shot. so far so good and my number is little whacked since i change my insulin from regular to fast acting. I take vitamin D and B 12. I'm also drinking young coconut water and it has helped me. what about test on GAD, Insulin, C peptide?

Hi Kat
It's good to know some one has same symptoms as me. What are your GAD , insulin and C peptide result? Which medications are you taking?

I thought the FreeStyle Lite was easy to use and requires less blood than the other meter I've used, the One Touch. Unfortunately, my insurance won't cover it. I've gotten different values with both meters, so I'm going to try to bring them both to the lab with me to see which one is more accurate.

Hi again, Kat--
I didn't *switch* to Byetta--I'm now on both together. By the way, your weight, cholesterol, etc., all sound extremely healthy--you definitely don't need to lose weight. So maybe you do have a 'different' kind of Type 2. Or it could even be possible that your lab results were a mistake. Are you testing your own glucose after meals? If it seems pretty normal, then you might want to ask your doctor if you can be re-tested. Good luck!

Hi Kat,
I've been on and off Metformin for years ... I think I went on it when it was still fairly new and felt pretty sick, so I went off it, but later I went on the extended release and I seem to be OK on it. I'm not sure how much good it's actually done, though! But I just added Byetta to it a month ago, and I was fairly OK on the 5, but I changed to the 10 this weekend and felt HORRIBLE--severe stomach cramps, pain and nausea--I'm going to ask my endo if I can go back to the 5.

Why do you want to get off met? Do you feel sick on it or are you worried about long-term problems?
