I wanted to tell my story of what I did today that was beyond careless. My plan was to take a shower and then eat some dinner, but my BG was a little elevated in the 160 range, so I bolused and took my shower. Then I called my dad, played frisbee with my dog - thought about eating but got distracted by my aunt stopping over. Scott E said… Absolutely. When I was old enough to understand this stuff, I believed that when the immune system kicked into high-gear to fight the chicken pox, it fought everything -- including the insulin-producing beta cells. Years after that, I read that there are theories (I'm not sure if they're proven or not), that viruses sometimes trigger the autoimmune attack that causes T1D.
It gives me some comfort knowing this. Since chicken pox is much less common these days (due to vaccines or whatever), I'm hoping that means there's less of a chance that my kids will get it.
