Drinking lots of caffeine is far less likely to increase your blood sugar than not taking enough insulin to balance the carbs and other calories you eat! Most of the data I've seen relates to pre-diabetes (type 2) and type 2 diabetes and caffeine...

This could be from the amount of caffeine, not necessarilly from having caffeine. Please be careful as I have seen patient's come in with cardiac issues related to these drinks.

Unless you have issues with high blood pressure or high levels of stress caffeine, in moderation, should be fine and should not affect your BG.

I drink things like AMP (Sugar Free) and I will usually have to wait a couple hours before I eat anything, and those drinks are LOADED with caffeine, so from my own experience, caffeine does make my sugar very sensitive for a bit.

Black coffee or diet coke (or my new favourite coke zero) has no effect on me. About once a month somebody lectures me on the evils of coffee/caffeine, but there's little "scientific" evidence against it, and my own experience is that it's ok for ...

How about drinking coffee, and not some milk/sugar/espresso drink? I drink alot of coffee, and it has little to no affect on my blood sugar levels; no sugar, no cream, no changes in my blood sugar.

Progress

I still haven't checked my ketones recently, but I think I'm making some progress in other areas. For example, my blood has been over 300 probably 3 times this week, as opposed to 7 days a weeks like I'm (sigh) used to, and I started going to the gym. Three days this week. Do you the last time I went to the gym was 9th grade PE class? Wow...

And I also got my OmniPod demo in the mail today. I'm really excited about that. Next July is the earliest that I can get a new pump, and I'm seriously con… Continue

Ketones

Confession: I don't remember the last time I checked for ketones.

I still have those little urine sticks somewhere... I think... but they expired in '07 (if I remember correctly).

And I had one of the meters that tested ketone levels too, but that was ages and ages ago.

Honestly, I have no idea how often I have ketones. It's probably a lot, considering my blood sugar goes over 300 almost every day. (as I stated in my last blog post).

I don't remember why I stopped testing. Either beca… Continue

It's Been A While

I've haven't spent much time on tudiabetes in recent months. After joining, I was so excited about connecting with people and learning some tips and tricks about diabetes management.

And I did learn a lot. I still carry smarties around with me instead of glucose tablets. But, unfortunately, I think a lot of the lessons didn't stick with me.

I'm a college freshman now, and diabetes has taken a backburner in my life for the past month that I've been here. I still check my sugar before eating 9 o… Continue

The Double-Edged Sword

So earlier in the week I finally got around to getting my A1C. Unfortunately, it's been more than 3 months since my last one, but that's an even longer story...

I was going to go get the labwork done last week, but I couldn't because I had too much going on at school. That really frustrated me, that the one open day I had available, Kaiser wasn't available!

I hate, hate, hate, hate getting any blood work done, and yet I still felt like crying when I was unable to go last week. I know how impor… Continue

Yay!

I finally got around to organizing all of my diabetes supplies today. I discovered that...
I own a life-time supply of lancets (3 sandwich baggies and around 10 boxes)
I have 8 meters (4 UltraMini--green, pink, 2 silver--, UltraSmart, Ultra2, and 2 BD Link--purple, black) I haven't opened the Ultra2 meter yet. I don't even know why I have that one but I think it was a free upgrade.
We're almost out of IV Prep.

So I'm glad that I got all of this organization out of the way so that my mom can sto… Continue
