"You can pull it and call Dex for a replacement. I had one that was gushing once and they did that. Additionally, I had one that I tried to make work and I had wacky numbers (like off by 100-200) and they told me to pull it and they would replace it."

hey Kim, no- not exactly. I had to give the Dex back after I completed the 8-week study. But during the 8 weeks, they gave me all the sensors I needed (and also all the pods and strips for the Omnipod, b/c I was required to use that for the study, too). I had to log info about what I ate, what my activity level was, etc. But it wasn't that difficult. They downloaded my data into this special computer program every 2 weeks. I did get to keep the Omnipod after the study, and I still have it in my closet. But they needed the Dex back so I went ahead and paid for one after I finished the study. I'm addicted to it!!
I really hope you can get one for him, one way or another!! I will keep my ears open and let you know if I hear of any opportunities!!

Hey Kim! Saw your post on the Dexcom board. I use a Dex and love it. You're right, though- insurance companies are the worst with high deductible$$. I wanted to let you know that I was able to "try" a Dexcom for 8 weeks before I got one because I participated in an artificial pancreas study. They are doing a few of these studies around the country, I think. You could check the JDRF website or call your local JDRF chapter to find out- they would probably know. That way, your son could try the Dex and (have his sensors covered too) for a while, to see if you like it. Good luck!!!!

Hey Kim, my son was diagnosed the same weekend as yours - we were even in Ohio visiting family when we checked his blood sugar and saw the 516. Welcome to TuDiabetes!

Take your time to learn how to get around here.

I'm a Type 1 who took it at 10 years old and am now 48. My daughter took Type 1 at 11 and in August she will be 23. If you need anything please let me know.
