Kris replied to Helen L L's discussion 'Number question'
"In the US mg/dl is the unit for Blood Glucose, in the UK (and presumably Canada) mmol/l is used. It's just a different unit for the same thing. Here's a link to a convertor http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/converter.htm"

"It's a mix of 30% NovoRapid and 70% intermediate acting insulin that they often put newly diagnosed type 1s on around here. It's a way to start bringing BG down and getting people used to the injections, but it's not very flexible, so…"

"HbA1C is starting to change in the UK, from June we'll get given our results both as a % and in mmol/l, and in 2011 they'll phase out the % altogether: Current HbA1c New HbA1c (%) (mmol/mol) 4.0 20 6.0 42 7.0 53 8.0 64 9.0 75 10.0 86"

Retinal Screening

Posted on May 21, 2008 at 12:10am 0 Comments

Went for my first retinal screen yesterday. It was pretty weird. As with most of my other diabetes related appointments, I was the youngest and most mobile person there. My mum reckons that it's a positive sign that there are so many older people there - shows that it doesn't shorten life, but when I see the state of them all with the complications they've all got it hardly has that effect.

As for the screening itself, there's not many more surreal experiences than having drops put… Continue

I was just reading your blog post there and I feel the same way about the appointments. I was diagnosed when I was 7, so when I was at the kids clinic I didn't see the complications first hand. My first time at the adult clinic freaked the life outta me because suddenly I seemed to be the only one there who didn't have very obvious complications...it's scary, but you do get to a stage where you block it out. I usually take my ipod and a book with me so I don't have to pay attention, which sounds really bad but it's just about the only way to cope with it for me. I noticed you were only diagnosed a year ago...how are you getting on?

Hey Kris, Sorry for the delay in reply.
The doctors have recently suggested I go back to 2 injections a day - It seems like a good idea at first but then I don't have the freedom.
So do you not know any Type 1 diabetics either? Saying that, I don't know anyone with any diabetes.
Where abouts in London you live?
Seriously, if you ever just want a chat, you know where to find me!
