Since you are going to be taking it in 12 hours anyway, I would just monitor my blood sugar today and take some fast-acting insulin to correct your blood sugars until its time to do your next basal. That way you don't have to stress about overlapp...

I got diagnosed at the same age as you did. I don’t know if I have LADA or just type 1. Are you thinking about the pump at all? I am just now adjusting to the shots. Any advice would help.

Hi Laura,

I'm a former grad student as well, went through the whole experience of balancing demands in the lab/classes/teaching and my diabetes at the same time. It can be hard, but definately can be done.
What is your field of study?

Hi Laura! How are you doing? Any more low blood sugars? How have you been feeling? Hope that you are starting to feel like a diabetes pro!

Wow, since 7th grade. What a horrible time to get diagnosed! 7th grade was bad enough without throwing diabetes into the mix. And you're writing a book, how great! I looked around for any good books about life with diabetes (from the point view of a diabetes sufferer) and couldn't seem to find any, which was really disappointing. Let us know when it comes to print!

Hey...
Welcome to the club. I've been type 1 for 14 years, since 7th grade. I'd agree it's a rollercoaster of emotions and I'm currently writing a book that I hope to have published in a year or so. It's mostly about my life with diabetes and the emotional aspects of living with the disease. Check out my blog, it should help sort out what you are going through. let me know if there's any way I can help.

Hi Laura! I just joined this forum today after 11 years of living with type I diabetes. Being recently diagnosed can be a roller coaster ride of emotions. You definately seem to have a key element to managing this disease effectively though, strength. It is so helpful to have that inner strength at the beginning, since there are adjustments to your life, but at the same time your hopes and dreams and desired achievements are still attainable. I have faced discrimination because of my disease, but over time I realized that if I let myself feel defeated, it was my fault. If someone wants to try to knock you down because they are ignorant or intolerant, it's your reaction to them that will determine the outcome. They will look and feel the fool and come to see the err of their ways. And if they don't, they are not worthy of one more second of your time.

a1c of 6.1

Well, I just got my very first post-diagnosis a1c back today. They sent me an email with a link to my test results, and I felt sick to the stomach as I waited for the screen to load. I was so worried it would be something really high and that would mean that what I'm doing right now isn't enough, and I don't know how I could possibly work any harder to keep my diabetes in check! But then I told myself, ok Laura, this a1c includes that period when you were first diagnosed and had no clue what was… Continue

having your cake and eating it too

What makes people think they know so much? I'm still getting used to being diabetic and found sometimes people (who, I admit, mean well) can be frustratingly presumptuous.

A couple of days ago I went out to lunch with some colleagues, one of whom knew I was diabetic. It was one of those buffet-style lunches, so I figured I'd give myself insulin first and then match my carbs to my insulin, to make things more convenient. After injecting, i noticed that there were NO CARBS to be had at this place… Continue

How I found out I was type 1

I have only known for 2 weeks that I have Type 1 diabetes (diagnosed on leap day!). No one in my family has ever had it. I've never even met anyone who has it (that is, no one that I knew had it), so I feel a bit lost these days. I wasn't even symptomatic when I was told, although my endocrinologist said that most people would have felt it at my blood sugar level.

I had a blood test in November, which I went for because my hair was thinning a little bit and they thought it might be my th… Continue
