I'm a 22 year old single T1 diabetic and I'm so curious as to what everyone else thinks about that question. I think it would be great to date a fellow diabetic since we'd understand what the other…Continue

This poem is inspired by my summers at Camp Sweeney in Gainesville, Texas. It’s a diabetes camp with the goal of giving kids a break from managing their own diabetes. We didn’t have to figure out our…Continue

Yesterday a new friend asked me if it was hard to be a diabetic. I didn’t really know how to answer, so I just shrugged. I guess my answer is yes, but with a huge question mark. How do I measure the difficulty of my life with diabetes when the entirety of my adulthood has been with the disease. I can’t envision my world without it.
I ask myself if I’d be the same person if the diagnosis hadn’t happened. Would I be less responsible? Would I value my health less? Could that one fateful…

Tonight as I watched Nicholas David sing his soulful rendition of Lean On Me on The Voice, I couldn’t help but get choked up. It’s one of those songs that each and every one of us knows and attributes a particular memory to, whether a memory of a loved one or of a friend or a place or a feeling. I hear that song and my vision clouds with memories of Camp Sweeney, a diabetes camp in Texas that I went to when I was a teenager. We’d sing Lean On Me at the end of every campfire and it brought us…

Trudy said… Hi Leanne. Congratulations on your Poetry Contest win. Great poem!
Trudy said… Leanne, you're doing great. This advice is mine alone, but my thinking is that since you write so well, everyone should get a chance to see it (blogs), while your poetry should certainly appear in the Poetry Group. Once upon a time when I lived in New York, I took classes in playwriting at the HB Studio on Bank Street, so I know what fun it is to write (and have someone read your work). Cheers!
Trudy said… Hi Leanne. I know that you must be tired of getting advice from me, but just once more... For your first poem, Job Posting,I suggested that you post it in a blog as well as the Poetry Group because it told your story so well and more people would get to read it. Now I'm suggesting that you post your last poem, Reflection, and any future ones on the Poetry Group in addition to a blog. The reason is that If TuD decides to publish more poems, yours can easily be found by the editors. Did you know that the TuD store still has copies of its book, which is "No-Sugar Added Poetry"? Cheers!
Trudy said… Hi Leanne. Thanks for the friend add! I look forward to knowing you better.
