I got a bum leg (site)

Posted on January 28, 2008 at 2:51pm 0 Comments

On Saturday I decided to give my abdomen a rest and try doing a site on the front of me thigh. Everything seemed ok, it didn't even hurt going in. Sure, my insulin intake was higher than normal and I bumped up my basal a lot, but I had just gotten my period and it was the weekend, so I was carb heavier than during the week. No problem, leg site is working out great.

Until I woke up this morning at 177. WHAT?!? I went to bed at 175 with 1.7 until of IOB. What's up with that? Well, I…

Another Installment of the Exercise Experiment

Posted on January 24, 2008 at 4:55am 0 Comments

The facts:

Turn basal off at 5 pm, BG is 139

At 7 pm, BG is 86, eat whole wheat bread and peanut butter - 20g carbs

At 7:15 pm, do 35 minutes of VERY HIGH hills on the treadmill at brisk walk

At 7:55, BG is 118

At 8:00 pm, decide to do yoga class, drink 5 sips of Powerade - 10g carbs?

At 9:00 pm, end awful yoga class, BG is 149

At 9:05 pm, go home feeling like I missed the mark again.

The theories:

For just the 35…

Insulin needs exercise and exercise needs insulin

Posted on January 22, 2008 at 6:43pm 1 Comment

I've had a pretty good week, I've gotta say. I started doing the Couch to 5k running program last Tuesday, which has gotten me into the gym for at least 30 minutes of good cardio every day for the past week, and the results have been FABULOUS for my blood sugar. I've dropped my basal .05 units/hour, and I turn my pump off for at least two hours a day before exercise. My total daily dose is coming in around 17 - 23 units. I'm very happy with these results.

I'm still having…

Why I don't want a CGM

Posted on January 21, 2008 at 12:55pm 3 Comments

My pump manufacturer, Animas, announced recently that they are joining up with Dexcom to incorporate CGM technology into their 2020 pumps - http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/080110/20080110005232.html?.v=1 - and it got me thinking about how that's not a road I'm too keen to walk down.

I've been doing this diabetes thing myself for about 1.5 years now. I've lived with my mom's own brittle T1 diabetes for the 22.5 years that preceeded my own diagnosis. I know all about fluctuating sugars and…

It seems to be working for me.

she has suggested a seperate basal for the night. If i am lower than 150. I have to go down to .10 for 7 hrs to prevent hypo. she said it will be some trial and error the first couple of times but to just keep going down a tenth each time.

Also they added another basal rate and took one out so now my pump runs like this:
12am 1.15
230am 1.2
730am 1.0
12pm 1.1
9pm .85

seems to work well for me this past week. my blood sugars have been amazing. Like im cured hahaha

Hey Lizzie, I put a response into your discussio about "the cure" today. I actually went way too deep into it. But I did come to grips with the fact that I may never see "a cure" -- but I don't think it's because somebody is keeping it from us. I don't think there is anything to "cure" but the complications of diabetes. I'm sorry if my response is lame :( but your question was awesome! Thanks for putting it out there for everybody!
