Vicki, I agree with Jan: cereal for some reason never works for us in the morning; it sends Jim's blood sugars soaring everytime. It really sounds like a I:C ratio problem. How long has this been a trend? With your small ratios I would do slow cha...

We have just started using the Combo bolus (Animas term for square wave); we use it for high fat meals but I have to say we still haven't gotten it completely down. Our CDE gave us a sliding scale of sorts: depending on his pre-meal blood sugar. F...

Thank you John for sharing, I too have seen this handout. It is great to keep for the future because it is a great tool for teaching.

Erin, My reply will echo what everyone else has said: diabetes is a tough disease, quite frankly it "sucks" so it's OK to feel overwhelmed and depressed but you need to remember that you have to take care of you so that you can be there for your d...

Hi Lorri, how are you doing? Did you have pump training? Did you start on the pump? We are doing good. A real good start for 2009. I don't want to jinx it but it's been going well since school started back, I don't know why. We did some basal adjustments (weekdays), and it's going great most of the time.

I have noticed a change though, we usually could change his site every 3 days (with a IV3000 or Tegaderm on top, otherwise, we had to change it every 2 days) and I think it's not down to 2 1/2 days, which is not a good thing with school. Unfortunately, we will have to start to do it every 2 days during the week now. It was nice while it lasted ;)

Take care,

I always love an opportunity to educate, especially when they are eager to listen. We are in the middle of the season and basketball has typically been a challenge for us. Morgan is afraid of lows and unsure of what to expect from the coaching staff. We have an amazing Varsity coach and a mediocre Frosh coach...Morgan plays on the frosh team. (the varsity coach wants to know anything and everything about Morgan's diabetes, the frosh coaches dad has T1 so he seems to know everything there is to know!)

Adrenaline will always cause Morgan an increase in BS, so we really have to work hard to go in with a good number to account for the rise. He will typically have to give insulin during a game...I always visualize Adam Morrison injecting on the bench :) Morgan is doing a great job of managing and realizes how much better he plays when he is in range.

Glad you had a great season with basketball. I remember that year of 'firsts' and basketball was one of the most stressful! Good job!

Good Morning Lorri. I just wanted to see how things are going. Has your son's basketball started yet?

Hi Lorri, thanks for your message, sorry for the late response ;)

I was glad to hear from you. I think that it's great that your son is doing so well with D! It helps that you have a nursing background (or am I mixing you with somebody else?) ;) I'm sure that sometimes, luck has a part in it as well ;)

I think that your pump choice is probably the best (because of the smallest basal increments). I can tell you that in some cases 0.05 units would be too much for my son. When we see that a basal rate is not enough (he goes higher about 70 points 2-4 hours after a good BG), we put up his rate 0.025 units and usually it does the trick (for us). When he's going to be older, I know that it won't make a big difference, but for now, it makes all the difference in the world.

Good luck with the pump and tell me how it's going ;)

Take care! -- Gina

Hi Lorri, how are things going with your son? For the pump question, there are lots of discussion on here about which pump... But it all comes back to choose the one that suits you and your son's needs and that's a personal choice. Most people think that their pump is the best but I am sure that most pumps are very good pumps!

Take care -- Gina

Hi Lorri, you've come to the right place, I've gotten a huge amount of help in just a few short weeks on this site (my toddler son was diagnosed October 7). Best of luck with your son.
