Hey Louis,

Saw your fueling question on Mike's page. The October issue of Bicycling has a great article on Team Type I and it discusses fueling for Diabetics. I went to a Diabetes Training Camp conducted by one of the people quoted in the article, Matt Corcoran, M.D. You should check out is website at Diabetestrainingcamp.com. I am sure if you email him he will send you some info on fueling. One of the things that they mention in the article is using a Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGM); I have one and it really helps. I have the Dexcom. Hope this helps.

Let me know if you have any more pictures or a link for that bike, you've peaked my curiousity!

On my rides I try to start with a BG of about 140-160, I lower my basal rate to 50% and I try to pick a good place about 1/3 and 2/3s of the way through my ride to stop and check the BG again. I use a camel back to carry my OneTouch mini meter and snacks as well as water. On the bike I have one water bottle that has Gatorade G2 (water is in the camelback), since G2 is low carb you can drink it through the ride without it spiking your BG. It seems to give that extra little bit to keep me from going low. On my first break I'll usually eat a PowerBar Gel, it's about 28g of carbs and dosen't sit so heavy on the stomach like an actual bar. If my second check is good I'll simply finish the ride, sipping the G2 as I do so. I'll check the BG again when I get home and it's usually around 70-90 which is ok because I'm home making food after I ride. Just be careful if you have to drive home because you could bottom out if you don't grab a snack. How about you?
