i don't know about oils. i have painted with oils before but not enough to give advice on technique. this is acrylics. acrylics are great because you can water them down to where they are the same consistancy as watercolor paint. but another fun t...

What is it you use to make the paint get that running off the canvas look. I like that. I have a painting I really like with that effect that I found in my backyard a few years ago in Austin. It’s much more subtle than what you’ve done. It’s also ...

Just wanted to say thank you

I'm fairly new here but I have already learned so much from you guys/gals. And I know mostly we talk about diabetes but I'm really happy to share my art with you too. Thanks for being so kind and showing your interest! Art is what keeps me going especially when the big D has got me down.

Thanks!

Let's Talk "Occlusion"

So I got the protective barrier wipes and they actually seem to help. There's def less redness and the bump at the injection is way smaller and doesn't itch and hurt. But randomly, in the middle of the night (I thought it was my alarm clock) my pod starting ringing at me. When I checked it said "occlusion". So, half asleep, I changed it out. The cannula wasn't kinked, I had no irritation and my BG levels were fine. What did it mean? Why was it doing this? You think it was just a pod malfunction… Continue

A little art talk

I know this has nothing to do with diabetes, except for the fact that I'm diabetic and this is my art but....

I wanted to share with you my latest painting called Sea Swept. Take a look at it in my photos. It's for sale at a really low price so if you are interested please message me or email me at martinscape@yahoo.com.

I am also offering posters and art note cards at my website at this exact location: http://www.lydiamartinart.com/artpostersprints.htm

Thanks for your support!

My dad has been a type 1 diabetic for nearly 40 years now. I grew up watching him deal with this disease day in and day out. I was a pretty healthy kid-no major health problems at all. I never knew how good I had it!

When I was pregnant with my first child I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. They assured me that it would go away after the pregnancy and I just needed to diet and exercise daily. No big deal. I hardly gained any weight with the pregnancy, I felt great and wasn't afraid of anything serious happening.

The baby was born in October 1999, healthy baby boy! I was never tested after the pregnancy to see what had happened with my blood sugars and I soon forgot all about it.

About a month and a half later I was starting to feel quite sluggish, thirsty, tired and sick. I was losing a ton of weight but figured it was just because I was breastfeeding. But it was a little excess- I am 5'9" and I got down to about 115 lbs. One day I was supposed to meet my parents for lunch downtown with the baby. But I couldn't get out of bed. I was soooo sick! And the baby just lay in his crib screaming his head off! I couldn't even muster enough energy to get him. My parents got worried when I didn't show and stopped by my apartment to find me in this condition. My dad instantly knew what was up and tested my sugars on his machine. The reading said "HI". Time to go to the hospital. At the hospital my BG levels were 800+.

From that moment on I was a type 1 D. My life changed forever.

I have my good days and my bad ones. I've dealt with all kinds of other health issues (some related to diabetes and others not). I now have two healthy kids and my husband and I just celebrated our 10th anniversary earlier this year.

So, that's a little bit about me, if you were interested.

Oh...and I'm an artist. Check out my work at www.lydiamartinart.com

Hi, Lydia this is totally unrelated to diabetes but i noticed you have crazy mad talent with a brush atleast. I've been looking for an artist to sketch something fore me... I've been trying to find someone to draw a guardian angel for me... Like nothing crazy just a female guardian angel maybe looking down from the clouds. Let me know if you got any ideas.

hi, Lydia, your art is just wonderful! One of our values here at TuD is creative expression as a way of coping with diabetes. I wanted to tell you we have a lot of Groups here for artists, and also about Diabetes Supplies Art, an interesting project where we make art out of our supplies.
