Diagnosis (April 21st, 2009)

I went to the emergency room with a lot of problems but didn't dream that one of them would be diabetes. My main symptoms that led me to the emergency room were nausea, vomiting and fatigue. I had already been diagnosed with celiac disease about a week before and thought that my symptoms would subside after I stopped eating gluten. But here I was, sicker than ever, in the ER being told that my blood sugar was 540 and that I had diabetes. I was admitted since I was extremely dehydrated and my electrolytes were way out of whack. During my three day hospital stay the doctors decided that I had Addison's disease which is an autoimmune disease that attacks multiple organs. Of course the pancreas was shot but my adrenal glands had stopped functioning as well which causes me to have to take hydrocortisone orally two to three times per day to be able to function. The crazy thing is that I haven't felt this good since I was 10 to 12 years old and I'm now 35. Feeling so good has kept me from feeling down and discouraged about the diagnoses but I know those days will inevitably come. I look forward to getting to know some of you and applaud you all for your strength and determination in dealing with your own difficult circumstances.

Hello Marc..I just noticed your profile and saw you have celiac and D's. Both my daugther and mother have celiac and I have been T1 for most of my life! So if you have any questions feel free to ask! My daughter has had celiac the past 2 yrs and my mother has had it for 13-14 yrs now. I read about your diagnosis above and see you're feeling well now so that's great! The good thing (even though it's tough to stick to sometimes) is how healthy both a D and celiac diet are! Take care & Stay strong! :0)
