Go Red Riders! Go Team WILD!

Hi everyone!I have lived with diabetes my whole life, as my father was diagnosed when he was 26 and I was 1 year old. I found out I had type 1 when I was 16. My brother found out he had type 1 when he was 20. My sister recently married a guy who's had type 1 for 8 years. I get diabetes.I also am an endurance athlete. I survived breast cancer twice. It was after cancer1 that I came up with the idea for the Red Rider Recognition Program. I joined the American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure Colorado Volunteer Committee and I gave them the idea.I was the captain of the first Team Red. The idea took off. That first year we had 100 riders in the jersey that declares "I ride with diabetes!" In 2011, the 5th year of the program, we expect well over 5000 people with diabetes will proudly proclaim their courage and energy for their health and wear the jersey.I then realized that women with diabetes didn't ride as much as men did.So I started Team WILD: Women Inspiring Life with Diabetes to support women who want to be fit, healthy and athletic and take their diabetes by storm!! Hi Mari,

I just wanted to connect with you, I feel like the universe is trying to bring us together :) I just recently joined this long and found a group called "diabetics who run marathons" and low and behold your a member. Coincedentially, at the expo this past fall I signed up for the Tour De Cure century ride shortly after listening to you speak. I just wanted to say that I am inspired by your story and looking to hear more about your adventures.

Wow Connie....3200 miles!! I haven't been on long distance rides in a VERY long time, and when I did, it was in the are of 100 miles tops, but generally less. My husband and I once belonged to a ski/cycling club, and the Summer was spent riding all over the place...in the city and beyond. In the Winter, we were on the slopes every weekend and went to a major ski locale yearly . That was 30 years ago....now, I ride in the neighbourhood and seldom ski....but I DO walk/hike. Albeit not with the energy I had in my 20s, but damn it....I DO walk!

I rode across the country with this jersey - from San Diego, CA to St. Augustine, Fl - 3200 miles, and people would stop me and ask about Tour de Cure, and people whom I did not know handed me money for donations. I ended up with over $500 in cash that after I would talk to the vendor or the person on the street or the guy making my sandwich or the little grocer who would sell me my diet coke of the day. I am on the board of the Tour de Cure in San Diego, so we ride on May 7th. My bike is black with red and I only wear red jerseys, so the fact that this one was RED Rider was perfect, and when I ride now just around my area, people ask me. It is the jersey where I get the most number of questions! I am a triathlete, a swimmer, a surfer, a runner, and a cyclist at age 61, and have been diabetic since I had kids with gestational diabetes that did not disappear. I am in better shape at 61 than I was at 31! Thanks for this wonderful Red RIDER program!
