Couch to 5K Running Plan

Posted on October 1, 2009 at 2:30pm 2 Comments

I began a running plan called “Couch to 5K". If you google it, you’ll find a version of the plan online. It’s a run/walk plan that gets you from walker to runner in 9 weeks. After reading someone’s Weight Watcher’s blog about her experience with it, I thought I’d give it a try. I’ve been on a plateau with my weight loss journey for some time now, and am hoping this plan will push me through those last 3-5 lbs that don’t seem to want to shed!

Anyhow, I’m part way through the second… Continue

Mennonite Borscht

Posted on July 30, 2009 at 10:17am 0 Comments

I have an old Mennonite cookbook from my mother's collection that I use quite a bit. If you've never tried a good, old fashioned borscht, then you have been missing out on one of the best meals in a bowl there is.

This recipe is a compilation of several traditional Mennonite recipes. The nice thing about borscht is that you can change it around to suit what you have on hand, and it always works out.

Borscht

- 2 quarts water

- 2 lbs soup bone (pork… Continue

Kielbasa-Bean Slow Cooker Soup & Spicy Black Bean Soup

The weather in the Yukon has been hot, hot, hot! This week has been in the 30's every day (celcius). We've been grilling a lot of our dinners - grilled corn on the cob, eggplant, zuchinni, mushrooms, peppers, asparagus, and pretty much any other veggie that finds its way into the crisper. We have them with grilled lean pork loin or chicken breast most of the time.

I still find ways to use my favorite kitchen appliance throughout the summer, though. When we give the grill a break, I… Continue

Moving down the scale and using less insulin

Posted on June 22, 2009 at 7:55pm 4 Comments

My Weight Watcher's journey has been a slow, but steady road to a thinner me. With a loss of 18 lbs so far, I'm well within a healthy BMI range and down to size 9 clothes - fairly small for my almost 6' height. I had originally set a goal of a total loss of 23 lbs, but I'm thinking if I change that goal to 33 lbs, I'll hit a BMI of 22. Perhaps I should just get to that first goal (5 lbs away!) and see how it goes from there.

Anyhow, I wanted to share with other insulin users out… Continue

Weight Watchers Journey

Posted on April 6, 2009 at 4:00pm 0 Comments

As you can see by the Ticker on my page, I’m endeavouring to lose a few pounds, 23 to be exact. It’s that slow creeping gain and ever expanding waistline that started about 10 years ago for me. I don’t want to exercise more than I currently do (it’s a dirty word, but I do my best!), and I need the support and personal accountability to be successful around my favorite subject, FOOD! I’ve never “dieted” before, so I’ve joined Weight Watchers. I'm following the Momentum Plan, and so far am… Continue

There's certainly lots to see and do in Ontariariario - but not enough 'free space'. I was surprised by the humid heat in early September. I'm always warmer than 'normal' people so I took lots of cooler clothing to wear and am really glad I did. Americans would see us in our shorts 'n T's and kept asking "Where are you guys from, anyway!" I could really handle the cold times but it's the dark that would probably get to me after awhile. I can't seem to get enough sunlight, even in SW Ontario.... which is about parallel with San Francisco in the US and Rome. I could have spent a lot more time in the Kluane NP... maybe we'll get a chance to go back by way of Nunavut and NWT - assuming there are roads!! Not a lot of roads up there! Missed the Northern Lights too... :-( - next time!

Hi Again... I really loved the Yukon - although the weather really improved once we got to Tok and Fairbanks. The sun was out enough in Whitehorse to have a couple really nice days there. I loved that Mills (?) Canyon and spent hours there taking pictures and talking to folks. Do you live right in Whitehorse? We spent 2 weeks touring the Yukon and back down through AK and finally a well-needed rest on a cruise ship back to Vancouver. I posted a few of my 1500 pictures on my page if you'd like to check them out.

Hi Maureen - I'm going to have to read your blog on your weight loss with Weight Watchers. I tried to join them many moons ago - but they wouldn't take me due to my being diabetic. I need to shed about 30 lbs - would like to shed more - but I'm afraid to not fit into my clothing anymore that I've had the last 30 years - I know lame excuse for not shedding weight (and maybe being able to take less insulin).

The closest I came to the YUKON was when I was working as a porter on CNR TORONTO TO VANCOUVER run for 15 years, a couple of times I went to PRINCE RUPERT, in the 40s. insulin-dependent since 1977 and a ROLE MODEL to at least 40.000, have learned from some of the top people in diabetes and at 91 still trailblazing and acting like I am in my sixties. I have an idea and since your into cooking good food, why dont you think of having a diabetes feast on INSULIN APPRECIATION DAY, JULY 30,collect your best chefs and diabetes health professionals, and supply a diabetes meal, EVERYONE can eat and enjoy. Start up an AMIGOKIT way of networking, that is call up 5 diabetics EVERY DAY, it will serve 2 purposes, make someones DAY and maybe save a LIFE, tell each one to call 5 people and so on. Its worth a try to start this kind of support. My contribution towards this DAY is asking insulin users, globally to join me, in silence, and give THANKS for us living a healthy lifestyle, TODAY.
