Next question... a new meter and adjusting insulin. Help?

Ok LOL! From one experiment to the next. :p
This one involves switching meters. (Why? cuz I use least expensive test strips that I can find... That way I can test pretty much "when" I feel I need to as well as the normal test times.) Ok.. So I was using the Optium and am now back to my Easy Check monitor.
ugh!!! I got myself going well. Last night I took a test strip from each and tested.This was at 10pm

new to Novolog and understanding me.

well, I messed it up today. I took my shot and was busy cleaning out cupboards. I forgot to eat! Novolog didn't change the picture for me. I thought it might as I didn't really know how different Humalog and Novolog would be for me. (other than one is cheaper than the other) ok so now I continue to work out the kinks in figuring carbs vs cowboys and indians shooting :p (me)

just me ... frustrated to no end

I'm sitting here at the computer when I would love to be moving and doing something else.
UGH> Why? cuz I want to catch the emails with Stephen (hubby that is deployed.)
Problem? I sit here and want to munch! I'm totally bored. I've graded all the kids papers and now I am just plain, really bored!
I don't need to be putting anything in my mouth!!!! sigh... What can I be busy with instead?

Cold Hands! help?

Hey All,
I've got a little problem. Cold hands, my fingers don't want to give up a single drop of blood for the meter! If I get my hands warmed up with hot water; it seems like my numbers go up too. If I warm my hands by tucking them under my arms; then my numbers actually sound right. I"m just tired of cold fingers.
Do any of you have this problem? Is it just me? What do you do?

Teach me! Basal / bolus ?

I am a type 2 with Humalog and Lantus at my finger tips:) (I'm on one vial and have one to use of Humalog then have to switch to Novalog due to Military Ins and what is available on base.)
So, I'm sitting here trying to figure meals... and basically come to the conclusion that I will stick with what works for me:) As long as my doc is willing to work with me to get this night time mess under control. Know what? I agree! BAD TIMES here too. My granddaughter is now 3 (that's the one in the pic there) I have another who is now 18 months and guess what??? I'm going to be a grandma again in January! Kids DO grow like weeds seems like it was only yesterday when my oldest was 3!!! God never gives you more than you can handle but sometimes I wonder what he has in mind!

Tell him to be safe and we're praying for him! He's one we can be proud of! My son-in-law made it through bootcamp only to drop out a few weeks ago! Oh well what can you do? Maybe I should just have kept my opinion to myself huh??????

Good to hear you are doing even better:) Good luck w/ fine tuning those night time BS...it is hard, especially on shots. I even added NPH on top of Lantus and Novolog to finally get the profile at night smooth!! Be well...and keep in touch:)

Good morning:) We were probably up at the same time! I was checking my nightime numbers...was up at 3a.m.:) CHO is shorthand for carbohydrates. I follow a low carbohydrate diet...means different things for different people...for me it is 6 grams at breakfast, 12-20 grmas at lunch and dinner. Snacks are all very low carbohydrate (less than 5 grams)...goal is to take much less insulin and minimize between meal bolusing (messes up tracking the effects of basals and meal boluses). This is all because current fast acting analoges have 1/2 life of about 4 hours...usually time between meals. Before being on Novolog and then later the pump...I had no real way of getting these kind of numbers. I think folks that say they do, are making some insulin and/or are a different type of diabetes. Lantus does work like a pump...but, not really. I was on Lantus w/ boluses of Novolog (before that Humulog and before that UL and Humulog) before pumping. All are an improvement over old NPH dosing schedules of the 80's...but, all are still unpredictable (absorption and utilization curves). If you have no insulin production (true T1), I would suggest trying the pump...if you cannot or do not want to, check Lantus baseline like you would a pump and then check fast acting like bolus/carbohydrate dosing.

On the cost of resources...ask you doctor/diabetes educator for guidance on testing insulin dosing, check library (I requested a few of these books), or always can get used copies on Ebay or Amazon for less than $5. The Wolpert book is an ADA publication...call your local office and ask them to use a copy. I would try anything to get to read some of these resources...make photocopies of parts you will use:) will make a real difference...YOU become your best advocate.

PS: I studied birds for a short time for the state conservation dept here in Missouri, meadowlarks were a pleasant companion on my bird surveys...marching through prairie grasses and bottomland fields:) usually early in the morning!

Hey:) Great to hear from you and would love to chat about basal testing...or anything else:) I love Tu because it keeps me on track...those numbers are a reflection of being focused on my care and much testing. When I do not pay attention...meaning do not check before and after meals, bedtime and an occassional 3a.m....I can quickly float upward! I think it is so because my schedule and life is always changing...so, requires changes in my basal rates. The only thing that I have found to realllly help my blood sugars is to follow a relatively low CHO diet. Mind you...I have gained a bit of weight as I have gotten older...so, maybe it will be different once I get the extra pounds off. My plan is to follow low CHO until I am closer to my goal weight and then add back in more carbs (up to about 100g/d...currently on 40/d). On the matter of basal testing...I found Howard Wolpert's book "Smart Pumping for People With Diabetes" to be helpful. Also have Walsh's book somewhere. There is a table in Wolpert's book on page 35 "Step by Step Basal Rate Evaluation". For daytime testing you just make sure your blood sugars are stable and less than 150mg/dl...so, you can fast through the meal and check blood sugars every hour. you are looking for your numbers to not fluctuate more than 30-40mg/dl...if more, go up on your basal for that period...if less, drop your basal down. I usually make adjustments in the range of .1u/hr...very individual. Nightime basal testing requires eating an early dinner, no food after dinner and begin checking blood sugars at bedtime (4-5 hrs after last insulin bolus). Check at midnight, 2-3a.m. and upon waking...some folks do it more often but, I have read that being awake skrews w/ your hormone release and will change your numbers.
