LADA is Type 1 diabetes, albeit slow onset as Scott says, and yes the appropriate treatment is insulin.

Hi Tony: There is a LADA Diabetics group here on TuDiabetes, and a great resource is actually the video under that group put together by Manny Hernandez, founder of TuDiabetes (Manny has LADA). LADA is a term for Type 1 diabetes in adults.

Hi Scott: My Minimed Guardian sits in a drawer, because I made a mistake and chose it over the DexCom. I tell everyone I can to not get the Minimed. I am tech savvy, I have been VERY successfully on an insulin pump for 12+ years (now the Animas 20...

Hi Kelly: Physicians are supposed to abide by "first do no harm." To tell someone who most probably has Type 1 autoimmune diabetes (and requires insulin to survive) to stop taking insulin is extreme harm (and malpractice). The definitive test for ...

Hi Paul: I would second what Libby and Gerri have suggested. You really should be tested to see if you have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. All too often, adults are diagnosed as having Type 2 simply because they are adults, not because the doctor has ...

Multiple times during travel, I have had total failure of my insulin pump. That's why I am grateful for all the backup supplies I carry, including fast acting insulin, long acting insulin, and syringes. I just returned from Eleuthera Island in the...

I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in April 1995. I was hospitalized and briefly went into DKA in the hospital. But because I was 35 years old, I was diagnosed as having Type 2 diabetes (despite having zero risk factors), and I was taken off of insulin and discharged from the hospital. Since I am a scientist, I studied the information provided to me about diabetes, and confronted my endocrinologist regarding my diagnosis. He admitted he made a mistake, I was put on exogenous insulin, and given the diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes one week later. Because of the horrible treatment I received when first (mis)diagnosed, I have worked ever since to change the perception that Type 1 diabetes is a childhood disease. It is not--it is far more prevalent in adults than children.

Since 1998, I have used an insulin pump. I recently started using a continuous glucose monitor (Minimed Guardian). I have lots of interests! I am seriously into yoga (I started practicing yoga 6 months before my Type 1 diagnosis, maybe yoga causes diabetes? :) ), and love hiking and the outdoors.

Thanks Melitta, tight control is my intention indeed, if I can manage, bearing in mind what people on this site are saying about burnout... I'm only in month four after diagnosis, after all. My main concern is that I am getting almost no exercise at the moment, and I know I should. "Pazienza", as they say here in Italy.

Oh, I forgot to say (I think this is what you mean by tight control): in the whole month of October (which is almost over), I have only been over 140 three times... Waiting to hear my A1C before celebrating because I read so much about meters running +/- 20 on these pages that I don't trust my readings now!

Hi Melitta, thanks a lot for your comment in the GAD discussion. I am new to diabetes and don't really know what you mean by "exogenous insulin" and "using tight control". Here is what I'm "on", let me know if that answers your question: 3 Units of Lantus at 10.30pm (i.e. once a day) and 500g Meformin after every meal. I have made a great effort to eat healthily, almost only fruit and vegetables, and I am starting to like it (but will turn into a rabbit eventually, I'm sure...). This is working so well that I am now "low" (i.e. below 80) almost once every day, especially my fasting BS, so I need to talk to my doctor who might (again) reduce my insulin (started off on 5 units, now down to 3 - how much lower can I get?!). Sometimes I wonder if I really have diabetes at all... What you say about extending the honeymoon period sounds great, and if you have any further advice on how to do it, let me know :-). Thank you! Uta

Hi Melitta! How are you? Things are crazy around here as usual. Just started caring for a 10 week old puppy who has so much energy! I have had to put off the Yoga Teachers Training Program off for 2 more months :-( I am to busy with work and some extra unexpected household expenses. My b.s.'s have been a bit crazy. Mostly due to work, the usual stress and not always eating the way I should....ah, life! All will get better. I hope things are good with you! Take care!
