My goals

You know, as supportive as everyone is - I feel as if I am really trying to obtain my goals on my own. I remember when I was younger and my mom forced me to eat well and exercise. I hated it and never got into it. Now, I wish I was around my mom more so that we could do all of this together. I know she would not only support me, but would force me to do what was necessary to achieve my goals. My husband? He is working an average of 70 + hours a week and is simply not interested in what I am doin… Continue

Can a type 1 and a type 2 live in the same household?

My husband was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I actually thought that this would make things easier on us because I wouldn't have to make two separate dinners for each of us. However, as I have begun to research things and have tried to create a good meal plan for both of us, I have found that this is way more difficult than before. For breakfast I love to have an egg with toast, some o.j., a grapefruit half, and some turkey bacon. Due to the cholesterol problem and type 2, my husband need… Continue

Hello, my name is Merietta... and I'm a diabetic

Do you ever feel that when you tell people that you are a diabetic, it is like telling them that you are a recovering alcoholic or drug addict? Every time I go to my parent's home my mom is sure to diabetes-proof the home, removing all sugar based foods and drinks within her home and all family member's and friend's homes as well. In fact, when my mom and sister felt that I should eat raisins and orange juice instead of coke or candy bars to bring my blood sugar up on those rare low occasions, t… Continue

Is my diabetes normal?

God, I don't test my blood as much as I should, I don't count my carbs like I should, I don't stay away from the sweets I like (at least I add extra insulin when I eat anything I KNOW will raise my blood sugar), and I am over weight. Is this normal? Are other diabetics like me? I am scared as hell about loosing my legs, loosing my eyesight, dying a horrible death - so WHY won't I do what I am supposed to do? Yes, I know better. No, I shouldn't eat a cheeseburger every night at 11:30 PM...so why… Continue

Hi Meretta, I'm a mom of a eight year old daughter (twin) Jillian that was diagnosed 12-10 -08 . In this picture she is the one on the left with the striped shirt. She has played the violin for the past 3 1/2 years. She plays Suzuki method from a great teacher here in Bakersfield. I haven't had a chance to look at your site much, I just found it and I need to get to work now but I'm excited to find it. Playing the violin has been a special thing between Jillian and myself. It is amazing what kids can do! Have a great day, Leah

Hi Merietta,
Congrat's on your goal to do a triathlon in 2009! I'm glad you joined the Triabetes group.

I have a couple suggestions for doing your first tri:
1) Find a tri club in your area if possible, and find some other people who will be doing their first tri. Having someone help you set up your first transition area (where you change from the swim to the bike and from the bike to the run) can be really helpful. Also, making workouts more social is a great way to stay motivated and to make the experience fun. If you can't find a local tri group, keep posting to the Triabetes group and I'm sure you'll get lots of suggestions!

2) To keep a handle on your BGs, keep records of your insulin/food/BGs during workouts, especially early on. This really helped me to understand how my body responded differently to the different sports under various conditions.

It already sounds like you are on your way to getting there, with your experience swimming and walking, and your recent bike purchase. I suppose, living in Las Vegas, you can do some riding during the winter? (aside from during that recent snowstorm!)

If you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask.
Cheers, and Happy New Year!
-Anne Findlay

Chico is adorable. My friend has twin pugs who just discovered snow last week. They were less then happy about it. Do you teach at UNLV? I work at the Excalibur in the box office.

Hi! Awesome pic of you outside Carnegie Hall. I just had a question for you -- you mentioned in a comment on the blog I started (misconceptions about diabetes) that the DMV is a pain. I'm just curious, I live in NY, and I've never had any issues w/the DMV, but I know in other states there are certain restrictions. What do you have to do/prove to get your license in NV?
