D-Disclosure On The Job, Circa 2000

Do you disclose your diabetes at the workplace? That's the question for the DSMA Blog Carnival in March, and I've recently penned a post over at my blog The Diabetic's Corner Booth on that topic. There's a specific reason why I handle my diabetes disclosure the way I do these days. I'd love the hear your thoughts on this, and how you handle the question.See More

I have some severe Low blood sugars at times, usually in the middle of the night or early in the morning. Where I thrash, struggle and have on occasion had some pretty wild experiences - as in the dog's trying to eat my head, the wife's an alien forcing poison apple juice down my throat, and family members are old-school Communists trying to convert me from my American ways by force. Here's my recount of some of those situations, but more specifically a look at how my own Type 1 mom's…See More

Thanks for reaching out Michael! Glad you enjoyed the interview. I did too :-)
So I just read your Sherlock blog about the "new" study on counting carbs. I'm dumbstruck. I'd say this is why the cure continues to elude us. Good post!

I cannot possibly tell you how your blogs have helped me! You are the reason I have become addicted to the online community. I have fallen off the wagon countless times in my 30 years of being a PWD and since I began reading about you, I have really developed a new appreciation for myself and the importance of good self care. I know it wasn't a goal for you to help me specifically, but I want you to know that you absolutely have, tremendously!!!! I want you to feel great and proud about what you do online to communicate, inform and advocate as well as the things you do with events you attend, especially Government Day!!!! So THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, Michael! You have really touched my life! Have a great day!

Sure just let me know when and where. I think it's important for all paernts to know that there for a while your child might blame you (I did my dad b/c there was another Type 1 in that side of my family when I got it) but in the long run your kids don't blame you. Such a GREAT feeling!!!! My daughter that I was talking about? She's now 22 and has 3 of her own children. Yep proud there. She was also bron missing her left hand but is now a CNA working in a nursing home! She's great there too and has patients asking for her!

It's ironic that you left a comment on my blog as I was sitting here thinking after reading your blog about driving with D. I was remembering about my severe low this year that rendered me unaware, but conscious. I had just finished playing in the two feet of snow with my two young children and had done all of then right things...even was on a CGM, but my sensor had just expired a couple of hours earlier and I put a new one on in the mornings...so I was in between. We have estimated I was out of it for at least an hour and a half before my husband found me. What was devastating to me is my children were essentially alone (4 & 9yrs). The guilt I still have is what has motivated me to stay on top of this. At times I feel I am obsessed. Your blog was really helpful in that it will serve to keep me ever mindful of driving with D. I check every time I drive, but sometimes you hate it and this is a reminder to endure it. Keep strong.

michael,
nice hearing from you. you're right; i've been at this a long time. currently covering the white house but luckily get out from time to time. been to iraq during the war; spent weeks in new orleans after katrin and have covered every presidential campaign since 1988. i'm 51 but still love riding the bus. your state is going to be interesting this year. lets hope we both out live the death of our industry. it's corny but democracy depends on it. thanks for friending me. all the best.
