Why do they try to kill me!!

Just got back from a 2 day business trip to New Mexico - and on two occasions waiter people gave me regular soda's instead of diet. Most times I can tell right away, but lately depending on the fountain mix it's not as easy. Was dealing with a sugar level over 500 in a lonely hotel room for 4 hours, was not fun. I am very very explicit about my drink orders - this seems to be happening more and more often. Sometimes I think these folks just don't care!!

Changeing sites?

With current insulin intake I can go 5 days without changeing sets. Everything I have read says you change every 3 days. Do you change based upon what is in your pump or just every three day. Sorry for the stupid question.

Accucheck Spirt Insulin Cartridges

Pharmacy sent me three boxes (30) unopened - kind of stupid because I'm on a Animas pump. I'm not charged but they will not take back they say they'll just have destroy them. I said I'd keep them and find them a good home. Anybody need these? MW

Offically Started Pumpng Today!!

Well tn finally happened today! After almost 40 years of multiple shots a day my pump is up and running - spent most of the day pretty lazy catching up on paper work and working on the computer - three Bolus of limited magnitude. Sugar levels hanging around 125-150. Then I took a 30 minute walk and feel like a invalid - will check my levels, but sure they are low. A little irrating because I thought I had this down pat - yea right after less than 1 day.- please a little humble pie please. Oh wel… Continue

Everything is now ready!!

Supplies finally arrived from Animas today, pump has been sitting in its pretty box for 3 weeks. Now just need an appointment for training, I have 3 visits at Joslin approved by my insurance for this! This has been such a trial! I hope I can work with the Comfort Insets because that is what I recieved. Had my A1c @7.5 for a year. Almost cancelled the pump because of all the paperwork and addtional Dr. visits. Its all been so crazy I just recieved a 3 month supplies of Accucheck Spirit Cartridges… Continue

Finally checking back, Michael - glad to see you are up & pumping. Are your eye probs resolved and are you back on the bike?
I remember a little learning curve with the pump as far as basal rates, so I am sure you'll get it down soon. (Your results may vary, but my daily basal total was about 25% less than the daily shot of Lantus before switching over.)

Hello Michael: :)

You are a Real Gentleman then...plus a Charmer. :)

Thank you! I'm Happy to say that we are both Survivors. It wasn't easy back then, was it? I guess you didn't know any other Diabetics.

Well, I am content that I've made it this far, as I hope you are. No one can that away from us. I do intend to keep abreast of continuing info that will help me to look after my diseases. That's all I can do...my Best. Whatever else happens(like getting kicked by them), I have no power over. It will happen eventually, as it should.

I hope that you are enjoying the rest of your summer. Be Good to yourself, Lad.

Hi Mr. Michael!!!! You wouldn't be calling me an old-timer, would you now?? :D HA! I prefer to be called a Pioneer of Diabetes.

Thanks about my A1c. It's not so hard. I don't eat too much plus I exercise. Together, that usually keeps my weight down so that I don't need a too much Insulin. I try not to worry about things that haven't happened yet. I keep my mind and hands occupied. Geez, I sound like an old-timer. :D

I hope that you are feeling Well Michael. Have a Great day.

Not a problem to help with the insulin waste issue. Here is a link to some pictures of other places you can use, I just came across this. Hope it helps!

So how do you like pumping so far, old-timer :-) ? I've been doing it for about 7 years and would never go back to MDI. It's been great for dealing with two problem areas: lows around 3 a.m. and my need to boost the rapid-acting starting at about 5 (I have big time dawn phenomenon).

It feels like it has taken the full 7 years to figure out all my basal doses (I change basal rates 10 times during the day, which my doc at first freaked out about because she didn't have enough fields on her computer program to record the changes, but now says, "it seems to be working."). I still am working to tighten my control (I think I will need a CGM to get much tighter).

Amazing what tools we now have, but not sure diabetes has gotten any easier (remember when we really had no idea what our blood sugars were doing between old-style super-peaking insulins and those plop, plop, fizz, fizz urine tablets?!)

Wow, i didnt know that! Thanks Michael. I see you talk about the "pump" a lot, what is that? An alternative to shots? Excuse my ignorance, i'm in South Africa and I've never heard of it. I didnt think we were THAT far behind for a "3rd world country"

So tell me about your OK roots. I take it your parents were from here? Stillwater is a great town. I live 70 miles straight west of there. I work for OSU though. Several years ago I made a deal with my local hospital that I would facilitate a diabetes support group and do a little informal diabetes education for the docs in trade for office space. It has worked very well......everyone wins.
