Hi Sharon, congratulations on your blood glucose control and alternative diet that's helping your type 1 diabetes! What exactly do you eat and not eat? I looked up alkaline diet and it seems to avoid dairy, grain, and meat. I've been on a grain-fr...

clinical trial, insulin needs, and realization

I ended the monthly infusions from the abatacept study I was in with Trialnet in February. I stayed on the grain free, dairy free, legume free diet (paleo diet) since January 2009. Since February to this day my insulin to carb ratio has been 1:50 and I was taking only 2-3 units of lantus a day. I actually stopped taking Lantus 2 weeks ago and my blood sugars are normal (70-120mg/dL). I usually do not take humalog with meals because I eat less than 50g of carb per meal.

Sounds pretty crazy but I… Continue

insulin changes

Hey everybody, I got the study drug last week again and my insulin needs went down big time. I'm now doing 4 units lantus and my carb ratio is 1:40. It's crazy! I don't think it's just the drug though. I think it's because I made some dietary changes, I kept the AMOUNT of carbs the exact same about 100-140g, but I changed the TYPE of carbs. I took out the complex carbohydrates that are difficult to digest like grains and dairy. I feel a lot better since making the dietary changes such as less su… Continue

Update on clinical trial, c-peptide results

I got good news from my lab results from last week!!

First of all, my a1c went down to 5.5 from 5.8. I tested negative for Celiac's disease and my thyroid is still functioning, despite my positive antibodies. I wanted to get my thiamine levels tested and my endo said okay but for some reason they didn't get the results back from that...

The clinical trial I'm in is testing abatacept, a drug that could possibly prolong the honeymoon phase in newly onset type 1 diabetes by interfering with immun… Continue

Hi Michelle,

I noticed on one of the blogs that you are doing a "paleo diet." After I read your brief description, I googled it and realized that I have pretty much been doing the diet on my own--no knowledge it was a real "diet." Now I want to read up on it more...I saw there are a few different books on it...since you're doing it, do you recommend any of these books?

Thanks a lot!

hey michelle, this is dean not my mom haha. but after talking to you i got on to really check out the site.. i think i may join, except i wont keep up with it like you do.. and i cant believe how many carbs and units of lantus you use per day.. i exceed your daily carb total with the food from your workplace! but your a1c certainly is worth the hard work.. compared to when you got diagnosed, i guess im a veteran of the subject haha. if you have any questions or want to talk or whatever i am more than willing to! but in reality you probably know more than i do about type 1.. well enjoy your weekend, ill be seein you next week lol.

Michelle - I feel like we have similar stories. I was diagnosed a year ago, and subsequently did a lot of research on food and healthy lifestyles (which i will be continuing in a masters program for holistic nutrition).. I'm pretty much paleo, though I don't identify as such, I'm into the primal guys like Mark's Daily Apple, I'm into metabolic typing like Underground Wellness and Paul Chek, I'm into Michael Pollan, Liz Lipski, and Dr. Mercola.. Not sure if you know these people. Anyway, as a result of eating copious amounts of real food, I do less than 5 units of lantus a day, and my carb ratio is 1:15 (1:50 is nuts, you still doin that?). I only eat raw dairy, I only eat grass fed/ pastured meats, I'm pretty much totally organic with fruits and veg, I'm completely off grains, I don't eat anything processed (except for home made juice and nut butters), and right now I'm pretty much entirely local. I exercise pretty regularly- biking, tennis, caveman stuff. I feel sooo much better than I did a year ago.

Anyway, I support what you're doing. Take care.
