About me...

Hello, my name is Monica. I am a 33 year old wife & mommy. I currently reside in Pearl, Mississippi with my husband & 3 beautiful boys!! I was actually diagnosed with gestational diabetes in 2005 while pregnant with twins. My doctor didn't prescribe any medications, only diet changes. I had other complications with my pregnancy & was placed on bed rest which made it impossible to excercise. I had no choice but to eat right, or I would have had to take the insulin injections (I'm terrified of needles, by the way...). I managed to keep everything in check right after the birth of my babies, but within a year I began to pile the weight on! That's when I began to feel very sluggish, light-headed, and constantly thirsty. I went for a general check-up & found out I now have pre-diabetes. My practicioner prescribed oral medications for me (Glucophage for blood sugar & Diovan for blood pressure) & demanded that I get on a diet & excercise regimen immediately in order to lose at least 50 lbs. Well, I didn't...and now I weigh a whopping 308 lbs (at 5ft 4in--that ain't good)! So, now I'm faced with the reality that I could actually develop full type 2 diabetes if I don't straighten up!!! I'm ready to shape up & take my health more seriously!
(I TEND TO TALK ALOT, SO LET ME KNOW IF I BLAB TOO MUCH!!! LOL)

UPDATE!! UPDATE!! UPDATE!!
Oct 13, 2008 I have started on my weight-loss/diet regimen & I am happy to announce that I have actually lost 13 lbs so far!!! I am so proud of myself!!! (Just had to pat myself on the back--lol)

Hello Monica, Greeting from a 91 young computer rookie, a SOUL brother from the city where INSULIN was discovered by BANTING & BEST, JULY 30 1921, who was clinically dead, in BOSTON, with BS of 880. Since then with my "second chance" have been a ROLE MODEL to over 40.000 and growing. First rule of thumb is remember, "THE PERSON THAT KNOWS MOST ABOUT THEIR DIABETES WILL LIVE THE LONGEST. Next have a good diabetes team(diabetes doctor, DIETITAN, social worker, podiatrist, pharmacist) Listen to your body, it tells you when to eat, what to eat, snack, EXERCISE, rest, sleep., Have a DIABETIC BUDDY, someone you are in touch with EVERYDAY, Wear a MEDIC-ALERT bracelet, it SPEAKS for you in case of EMERGENCY, Everybody should be RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN HEALTH, Be in CHARGE, not DIABETES, Since both you and your husband have diabetes, why dont you compete against each other to see who has made the most progress and improvement within a specified period. When goals are reached give yourself a small reward to be encouraged to reach the next goal. Doing things at your own pace, drink aglass of water BEFORE each meal and you wont have room for things we love DESSERTS. At my age I have enough things to do to last me another 20 years, because
