The first nations people in our community have been the hardest hit by complications for a long time. I am sure it has a lot to do with the inability to afford quality food. With the exception of 8 years in the 80s on synth, that nearly killed me, I have been injecting pork insulin since 1959 and no longer have to think about it. I am totally complication free and the diabetes eye clinic told me not to come back many years ago. That is as good as it gets IMO. I eat a low carb high protein diet which matches the slow activity of pork insulin. Everything is slow and steady. My A1cs are usually 5.5 - 6.0 and my only concern is bipolar disorder.
I still use the exchange system for diet documented on the Mayo Clinic site like I did in the 60s. I'm old fashioned I guess but it works well for me. The last endo I saw was in 1969, when I was 14, so have been adjusting dosage and diet myself ever since.
