Good news on the cure front....

Posted on January 29, 2012 at 12:20pm 0 Comments

I learned this morning that there has been some new, optimistic research done on the long-sought "cure" for Type 1 diabetes. One of the difficulties in reversing type 1 is that there is an autoimmune destruction of pancreatic islet β cells, so even if new ones could be stimulated to grow they'd be attacked by the body and soon destroyed. Using cord-blood stem cells, however, a recent clinical trial (apparently a joint China/US venture) has demonstrated that this autoimmunity can evidently be… Continue

6.9 HbA1c!

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 6:54pm 6 Comments

It's nice to finally be able to make a New Year's goal and today I was able to reach one. Stopped in to see my CDE for the first time this year and had the obligatory HbA1c test that we all know and love. Much to my surprise, I was below 7! Just barely, 6.9, but I'm not complaining.

The last…

The mathematics of weightloss

Posted on January 10, 2012 at 8:09pm 3 Comments

On my main blog, TheDiabeticMan.com, I just put up an article I wrote about the mathematics of weight loss.I'd repost it here, but since it is pretty long (and includes a number of tables) I didn't want to be accused of spamming the system with a cross-post. :-)

In short, I walk through the steps of how the body loses mass utilizing basal…

Thanks for the friend add Niko. Oh, by the way, you gave some great advice in that discussion. I kinda wish I'd thought to say that!

I like the DJ Dangermouse JayZ/ HelterSkelter one. I like a lot of the Girltalk mashups too, Big Country plus crazy gangster stuff is trippy when I'm running. The sort of wierd noises from left field are good when I'm out on the long runs.

I like the theory of barefoot running but I'm sticking to shoes. After I "punted" and started moving back to the more supportive ones, I had some pretty good runs which makes me think that the lighter shoes/ barefoot thing may be overrated? The "interior" of the Pure Cadences is really nice though!

Thx for friend add! I agree it's a nice guitar! I just came up from the basement and hacking around with it. I have a bunch of banjo stuff on my ipod, I mixed some Flatt & Scruggs cuts into a drippy psychedelia mix not that's a good playlist combo.

I've tried some of the barefoot shoes but haven't run shoeless. I ran a couple of half-marathons in Saucony Kinvaras but was getting really creaky at the longer distances. I have been running in Brooks Pure Cadence shoes for a couple of months and am liking them a lot and hope to keep trucking along in them when the weather gets better.

Thanks for the pancake recipe! I'll definitely try them. Now, if I could only find a diner that would make low-carb pancakes for me, I'd be set. :-)
