My son, Alden, was diagnosed Sept. 2, 2008. It's been a mere month now.

He has moments of utter despair and anger that break my heart, but most of the time he has handled this with incredible grace and courage. He gives himself the four injections a day - I think it is his way of having some measure of control. We are fortunate in so many ways: his teachers at school are wonderfully understanding, we have decent insurance, we don't live a hundred years ago....

The onset of symptoms to diagnosi… Continue

Hi,
Madeline has her PUMP! I love not having to give the shots! No more NO Mum’ie! Madeline loves the pump too.
Madeline’s BGL are much better with the new pump but we are having too many hypos at night. They have been trying hard to fix them but I guess it all takes time.
I need to set my alarm twice in a night 2am and 4am, as it seems if there's no low at 2am it might happen a 4am. Its makes me feel like a new mum with a baby again all these sleepless nights. I hope this get easyier.
Madeline never really had a honeymooning time, we seem to have fallen straight into it which seems to have made thing harder for us.
Madeline has started to do her own BGL a big step for 3yr old. Now she wants to do them all the time, I don’t mind at least I now what levels she is at.
How are you going? Madelines set changes have been good so far no cream no ice we thought it might be better to not have a lead up to event. Seems to work... the cream made her a little worried about whats going to happen next!
Any way I'll check in again soon.

I went to social services to get Eric on Medicaid. Results on my blog. Interesting to see your note about Sen. Clinton's bill to make the pre-existing condition exclusion invalid as long as continuous insurance coverage has been in place, because we have that law in Maine, and it's the law in Massachusetts. As much as I curse the lousy insurance policy I bought Mark and the kids, I also have to bless it because I bought it 13 months and 1 day EXACTLY before Eric's diagnosis, which means he was covered for a full year prior to the diagnosis, which means now, as long as I keep him insured, he can't be refused healthcare. According to Maine law, that crappy policy of his is the one thing that guarantees that once July rolls around, I'll be able to put him on my Aetna policy, and they won't be able to refuse him coverage. Maine law says they can't even ask for his prior health records, they can only have his basic information. So even though the current policy doesn't cover nearly enough, it gives me what I need to see me through... for the time being.

Hi Happy New Year
Thought I'd drop in and keep you up to date.
Madeline is getting an Animas Insulin Pump on the 27th Jan 09. I keep up at the health professionals and the bumped me up the list. Madeline’s BGL have been all over the place and I’m glad the started to hear me!
We will go to hospital for a week to monitor her and learn more about carb counting.
Over Christmas she had a serve Hypo went into a fit the weather was very hot the Insulin seemed to be working like double strength.... Then she was not eating enough. I call the ambulance and gave her the glucagon injection. She was all fine again in no time. Have you ever had to give the glucagon injection?
I Hope all is going well for you.
Kind Regards
Kirsten

I haven't really made much effort to investigate it yet--focusing more on getting the financial situation under control. I think Eric's insurance company is screwing us so I am checking into it--Maine law requires diabetes supplies to be covered, but it's unclear whether that's only if the policy covers prescriptions (which Eric's doesn't) or regardless. I was hoping to apply for support from Islets of Hope but they had closed off the application process in December. So... reading up on the pump is on my "to do" list.

Hi Nina,
How are you going with the pump? I hope things are settling down for you.
We went to one of the largest children’s hospital in Australia last week to do the test for Celiac. Madeline did really well and we got the results back yesterday 'she doesn’t have Celiac' which is fabulous news.
I did change her diet after the test to see if it made her feel better and it made a big difference she seems much better but her BGL are all over the place.
The dietian said she may have a reaction to the preservatives in the food and maybe to bring back one type of gluten at a time so I will slowly and see what happens.
I’m so glad she is not a Celiac!
We also saw our endo yesterday they are saying the waiting list for Madeline to get a pump is going to be after JUNE next year!
I’m not too happy with that so I’m trying to see what the list is like at other Hospitals in our area. I think Australia is a bit behind with the times.

Any way must go.
Hope all is well
Kirsten
