It's scary how much bad advice we're given. An ER nurse conducting a nutrition class should be doing a better job. I can't stand those glucose tabs & use jelly beans. They're cheaper & taste a lot better.

Thank you, Gerri. I was following bad advice. I will go back to the glucose tabs.

Proteins aren't a good choice for raising a hypo. Proteins take too long to digest & only about 58% of protein turns to glucose anyway. This is why fast acting sugar (glucose) is used. If glucose/dextrose isn't working fast enough to treat a low (...

I also have trouble with lows (can go as far down as 23 and not know it - no symptoms until I start to sweat). I recently went to a nutrition class to learn about calories, proteins, carbs, fats and fibers, and how they react in the body. I learne...

Have had lows like this & usually before bed, to make it extra aggravating. One thing to remember is that it can take up to an hour to see the effect. What we're told about the 15-15 rule doesn't always work & leads to people over-correcting & en...

Unfortunately, our livers can really kick in & dump glucose in response to lows--especially lows that are sustained for a while. You did the absolute right thing in taking some tabs, checking after 15-20 min., and taking some more if still below t...

Yesterday I was in the 60s, took tablets, went to 75, then jumped to 235 after dinner. Go figure.

Yes, I've had my share of lows that persisted through eating plenty of fast acting carbs. This disease sure sucks, doesn't it? I've also had to take glucagon to stay conscious, back in my MDI days. I've been pumping for the last 13 years and while...

Have you ever had a low that just doesn't seem to go up, no matter how many tablets you take, and when you finally go up, you go up too much? The other day, I had a low that lasted about an hour, over the course of which I need to take about 14 ta...

One of those Days

You ever have those days where your meter tells you you're fine and you feel like total crap? Today was one of those for me, and I ended up having to leave work early because I almost passed out in the sun when I had just tested and was supposedly at 117. I got up to get back to work and very suddenly I got VERY lightheaded. For a few seconds literally all I could see was a purple-ish haze. It was enough to freak me out a little, so I told my boss, and they recommended I go home and relax, so he… Continue

I got mail today that says I'm eligible for Medicaid! In a week or two I should have a card and I will finally be able to afford my necessities! It took them long enough LOL.

Working Again

Finally, after a few months of having no money of my own, I am working again at a place where I've been before and have a good reputation. My family (mostly my mother, grandmother, and aunt) seem to think that I won't be able to handle the outside work while maintaining good glucose control. So far I have had a few highs during the first week, but I'm still getting used to the new routine. I think this week should hopefully turn out a little better. Meanwhile, my Medicaid STILL hasn't started ye… Continue

Just wanted to say "bonjour" and enjoy your meal out at Red Lobster! Try to do your best in keeping your BG's stable - but the main thing is to enjoy yourself!!! So, I have a feeling you like pizza!!! I have been "bad" the last few months - eaten pizza a few times in one month - that's a record for me - but it's so good. I manage to not have my BG's spike too much - which is a good thing - tho' sometimes my method of "guessing" on the carbs works - other times it doesn't . Life is an adventures isn't it? BTW, I'm a Star Trek fan as well!!!
