Pumping at the Beach

It's vacation time! Woohoo! We're going to the beach for a glorious week of sun, surf, sand, and hopefully I can finally make some headway in my book. But I have a question.  What do I do with my daughter's pump at the beach? When we're at the pool she either wears her pump if she's out of the water, or I put it in my cooler while she's swimming. But at the beach I envision rolling around in the sand, digging holes, making sand castles, running to and from the water, sometimes going in, sometimes…See More

How to keep a pump cool

My daughter started pumping in late Sept., so all our experience has been in a cold New England winter.  Last week we went to Florida to walk in the JDRF walk in Sarasota.  My daughter wore one of her spandex waist bands and tucked the pump inside, next to her tummy.  By the end of the walk we were all sweaty, and her numbers were on the rise.  After 2 hours of rising numbers and corrections having no effect we changed her site and figured we had overheated her insulin.  Throughout the week she…See More

Hello!! Yes, Christmas was very nice. I really enjoyed watching my daughters and granddaughters opening gifts and so happy. My oldest granddaughter turned 8yrs old on Dec. 27th, and I just cant believe how the years have gone by...seems like they are were just babies! I hope you and your family had a beautiful christmas, and I do wish that the New Year brings much love, happiness and good health to you and yours! Take Care, Robyn xo

Hi, Pam! I just read about your ups and downs over the holidays! You made it through your first holiday season...hooray! I too am looking forward to the quieter routine we have. We were just in FL for the week and ate a lot more french fries and ice cream that were hard to bolus for. Today she had chocolate milk and I thought I covered it correctly, but later found her to be over 300, so had to bolus again. I'm glad to be back to our routine and our regular diet. Keep up the great work! :)

Pam,
Your children are beautiful! I love your pictures. My 3 year old was diagnosed with T1 February 2007. She was just 13 months old! We're involved with JDRF too. I joined hoping to find moms of T1 kids.
Thanks for the welcome,
Megann

Wow...I haven't encountered the effects of adrenaline yet. I guess that will come if she's in a game setting and excited, right? Someone told me to lower or turn off the basal one hour prior to exercise to help, and that seems to help. I usually give a snack before hand, and make sure she's around 200 BG before she starts to exercise. Last time she came out of the exercise at 97, so it worked just right, thankfully. Ok, have to get ready for that! Take care!

HI, Pam~ Glad we can be in touch. D. can be very stressful. I take Elisabeth to a weekly gymnastics class which is a new thing for us...my girlfriend and her daughter just do their thing no big deal. Me, I'm doing BG checks before hand, hoping I fed her enough and lowered her basals early enough, taking off the pump, watching her like a hawk during the class, checking her afterwards if need be, putting the pump back on, etc. etc. When it's all done, I just feel stressed out! But, I know it's worth it and when I get used to it, it'll be more routine. Take care! Jessica
