Hello... I was dxed Type 1 (LADA) in late October 2011 with an a1c of 5.7. I went to a very low carb high fat diet on November 1st. I lost about 35 pounds in 4 months and have not gained or lost…Continue

My 17 year old son was complaining about being thirsty all the time and he has to get up at night to pee most of the time. I checked his BG and it was 107 a couple hours after pizza. I took him to…Continue

Hello all and thanks to those welcome notes.
I was initially diagnosed Type 2 in late September. I geared up to battle the dragon. Started walking and quickly advanced to jogging, followed the dieticians advise and started feeling pretty good. Lost weight (about 11 pounds in a month or so) but my Fasting Blood Sugar levels were averaging 116 spiking in the 140 to 160 range 2 hours postprandial. My Doctor ordered another blood test on my follow up and I was informed last week that I…

Shawnmarie said… Oops! Just saw in the note with your friend request that you're not on insulin yet. Will be interested to see how your honeymoon pans out. Sometimes, I feel like I was mis-diagnosed. Then I screw up a bolus and am reminded that a BG of 250+ is not "normal."
Shawnmarie said… Hey Lab Mouse! Was just checking out your profile and wondered what happened with the endo? Are you on insulin? I was diagnosed on 10/1/11. Turns out my honeymoon is taking care of my basal needs, but I bolus for meals. Although it has its challenges, it makes food choices somewhat easier knowing the "to spike or not to spike" question isn't entirely left up to the "carb or no carb" equation.
Bob said… Yea a bit of a kick in the teeth at first but I try to look at the glass half full. It could have been picked up years later when the damage to eyes, kidneys, and nerves had kicked in. I also feel blessed that my circumstances (at least in regard to this disease) are under my control. If I take charge, life as an insulin dependent diabetic needs to be no more nor less than an inconvenience to my daily routine. I suppose I have also found it interesting how much there is to learn about the management of this particular disease. A bit of a science nerd at heart. Also, since I work in the medical field I really can appreciate how things have become easier in regard to the management of DM1 than even 15-20 years ago. Well, ask me in a year if I feel the same way LOL.
Bob said… Patrick, I had classic polydipsia, polyuria (too much drinking and too much peeing) during a holiday in Paris where I was eating way more carbs than was normal for me. I came back and had a fasting sugar which cam back at 374! A Hgb A1c came back a few days later at 11.7 I started insulin the day after my FBS came back high. Things "so far" are going well on low carbs, excersize and a single injection of Lantus in the mornings (18 U).
