It is not so simple an answer. My approach is multi-fold, and I believe it's based on the best science available. Refined grains are out of my diet entirely due to both sugar and omega 6 concentrations. I won't get into the omega theories, so go...

I refuse to feel guilty. I work hard at controlling my sugars and taking care of myself. When I indulge, I indulge. I celebrate. I enjoy. I feel good about the occaision and the people I'm with. I may or may not pig out; I likely will, but there h...

Alexander Graham Bell http://www.science.ca/scientists/scientistprofile.php?pID=120 Bell died of diabetes in 1922, ironically the same year that Banting discovered insulin.

Not necessarily. It may just have been a large quantity of food. When we eat we release a combination of insulin and glucagon. Of course in diabetics the insulin release is impaired or missing, so we only get the glucagon. The larger the meal, the...

HFCS is in practically all bread and pretty muchh all packaged foods. It is very difficult to avoid. I don't buy his seeming assertion that fructose is the entire cause of metabolic syndrome; though I can buy it's the primary cause. I think in ge...

I am buying into the low carb phiosophy. I shoot for 50g a day, but on some days I get up to around 100. I eat practically no grains or sugars. I've had 16 pieces of bread this year. I'm very happy with the results so far in terms of weight loss, ...

My last is back under 6 at 5.9%. FYI I am/was a pretty brittle type 1 with a mid-7 A1C and struggling with major hypos before swtiching to a pump three years ago. Been 911'd nine times in my career, and barring any screw-ups, those now look like ...

PP: I have to stick a thumbs up to you, thank you. I'm asking permission to copy your rant and give it to a few friends, or better yet send them here to read it themselves. They are older women who have to have their food and drink to hide other t...

You are right in that one has to look at the whole picture. You have to determine where your control level fits in. The things I'm ranting against are in my personal value system trivial. They may not be in yours. I can't make judgements for you, ...

I guess what I wonder is why you feel like you say you do about others choices? I know people who have awesome A1C's and all they eat are carbs for some reason they know how to cover them perfect. I know others who eat only the things they should...

Very good rant! I hope every diabetic reads this, does the exercise and comes to their senses about how important tight control of BG levels really is! There can be no excuse for slacking off or for high A1c's. I had gone wayward and I'm sure I'v...

I wouldn't change my basals at all, but I am very confident in my basal settings. In fact, I'd look on the whole event as an opportunity to do a 25 hour basal test. Basically it's a test to determine whether your basal doses keep your sugars more-...

Compromises

Once in awhile I see a comment on a diabetes social media site like "I'd rather live with a higher A1C and die younger than make sacrifices like living in a rigid diet and living until I'm 90." Another comment in discussions about low A1C's is "You people with low numbers make me feel like a failure."

These types of comments really get me going. They make me want to whack the OP across the shins with my hockey stick. Believe me, that would get their attention! I feel very strongly that we do no… Continue

Lost

How many of you have been lost?

I spent many years of little to no testing, injecting by feel, and feeding my insulin.

Why I never tested much is a difficult question to anwwer. I knew I should. I actually tried at times. I saw my doctors regularly enough. I think there are a few reasons. Maybe some of you can relate.

I could never see much reason to test. Now I consider myself a smart person, above intelligence and able to resolve many difficult problems. I am a professional accountant, a ma… Continue

I did it!

Today I posted my first sub 6 A1C at 5.9%

I was pretty confident I'd get there. In fact during the last two weeks my BGs have been super awesome. I'm almost expecting mid 5's next time. I'll post about that later. Still, it's been my main goal for the past two years. I felt so high when I got the news I nearly screamed out loud at work! Woot!

My cholesterol came back great too. HDL: 1.55, LDL: 1.76, Total: 3.51, Trigs: 0.44 compared with six months ago of HDL: 2.00, LDL: 2.02, Total: 4.33, Tri… Continue

Hockey Night in Canada!

It may not seem like much, but I played an hour of pickup hockey last night. It was my first since March two years ago.

So why has it been so long?

Aug 2006 Eye Hemmhorrage
Oct 2006 Vitrectomy
Fall 2007 Minor bleeder/laser
Winter 2007-08 Two bleeders
May 2008 Bleeder that left me 20/60 in left eye
June 2008 Laser for bleeder.

The thing about eye problems is you can't do much physical activity at all while you are bleeding. I don't want any more vitrectomies, so I have been a good little boy a… Continue

Some history

I'm struggling with how to tell my story. First off it's nothing special. I don't even remember much of it. What I do remember, I'll probably get wrong. So take it with a grain of salt. My current situation is much more exciting. Well it is to me anyway. I think this is because I've finally taken the bull by the horns and am fighting him with all I've got. I think I'll start off with the mundane history in one or two posts. Then I'll try and communicate some of my recent experiences. Exactly how… Continue

I grew up in a rink. I refereed hockey when I lived in Michigan, moved to Florida to get away from hockey and ended up in an arena as a career. I do still play some, but not as much as Id like. I just started my pump 2 weeks ago and havent played with it yet, but I will search for that thread. My A1C was so high partially because of an episode I had with some teeth pulled which ended with me in ICU, and a BG over 1000. Thanks for the comment. I can't wait to get to know people and become active in this group. Thanks again!
