The CGMS consumables actually isn't that bad. I use the Guardian on and off. One sensor costs 35 dollars (US). It supposedly lasts 3 days; but mine have lasted about three weeks each. I think wearing just a sensor per months is helpful.

I'm 20 years old.
I lived on my own for four months when I was 18, but I really didn't do well on my own (memory problems, totally neglected all hygiene, difficulty talking, heard voices, etc) . I will try moving out again in a year or so. I will be student teaching in the fall and will hopefully get my bachelor's degree and teaching certification in November/December. I will get my degree in high school math, and my certification in high school math and I hope environmental science as well.
I worry most about nocturnal hypoglycemia. Hypos used to wake me up with a very scary feeling but these days when I wake up hypo I usually feel really wonderful and I'm irrational and don't really want to eat.

HI! Havent been in here for ages either.. Gabriel finally got his diagnos (autism) in november, but we suspected it for a long time before that. Now we try to decide what to to, how to think about his future etc. Special schools? No, not Gabriel - he´s very high functional and we think he needs "normal" people around him at most times to get the grip of that we "normal" people people exist too *S*

We´ve had a turbulent time for the last two months. Many moodswings, some new fears and some new aspects of new "behaviors" that we do not approve of..But Gabriel is " the one and only" not just in his own mind but think he most times should be in in everybodys mind..*S*

Most good the diagnose did us was that we got an explanation to why he doesnt feel his highs or lows, it all comes down to autism to begin with - and now we understand that and that lifts a wheight from our shoulders and the pressure we sometimes - without knowing better- lay on him " Why dont you tell us that you dont feel well?" ...he just stared at us not understanding anything when he was so low that we felt that he just had to feel it...but then again, can you go out in the winter with lots of snows without your winterjacket or boots on, then you have the explanation right there - he just dont feel things the way we do, no matter how ever smart he might be otherwise.

Does your son have sensory issues with the adhesive to keep the pump on?
What are your son's communication skills like? Can he feel highs and lows, and can he communicate them to you? Does he talk about diabetes?
For me, autism and diabetes interact in that it took me a lot longer to be diagnosed with diabetes than it otherwise would have because other people had a hard time understanding what I was saying when I talked about it. Also it was hard to separate my diabetes symptoms from my autism issues- I know now that my sensitivitity to light is actually a symptom of blood sugar, but at the time we thought it was just a sensory issue. And although having some urinary urgency issues is normal for me, the extreme problems I had in the year before dx wasn't just a stress+ autism issue, but I didn't know.
I've also had them interact in that I'm hypo unaware and have been from the start. It's not that I don't have symptoms, it's that it's very hard for me to figure out that they mean that I'm hypo, and other people don't pick up on them. I also have had sensory issues with wearing a CGMS, and the hospital was torture.
But I think the biggest difference is probably in that I am an obsessive sort of person because of autism and I obsess about diabetes. That probably will be very helpful for me in the long run.

Hi! I just dropped a message to Courtney since i found out that she too had a son with both diabetes and autism..I´m Mona from Sweden and im in the same situation as you two. I have a 6½ yr old son with diabetes and a-typical autism and probably also aspergers syndrome as well. Gabriel was diagnosed with diabetes 4 days before his second birthday and has been on an animas pump since he was 2 ½ yrs.

Thanks for the hello. Check out member called rockyasock That is my daughter's page. Is your son a soccer player? My son has played since age 8 was diagnosed at 13 and is now playing his first year in premier league (at 18) for The Entrance. Considering how poor his regime is his sport keeps him in pretty good nick.

Is he the one in the picture? He looks adorable.

The pump is supposed to be really good. I am trying to get one.
