How do you control your Type 1? Diet + insulin?

To add to what is said below, try journaling too. I know it's a pain, but I have found that certain foods cause my kids BS to react differently than what is listed on the lable. Maybe you can spot ...

There is a trend of depression and diabetics....I mean...there is a lot to cope with. However, if you notice you feel this way every time you make adjustments to your meds, it seems you have an answer. Take notes and talk to your doctor about it. ...

Hey, that is a cool idea. My son also has mild seizures, dang wish I had thought of that. My kids both wake themselves up with they are low at night. Doesn't happen often, but it does. Eventually you will learn to trust your program...but until th...

Wow...I want to offer support, but really don't know what to say. I know how horrible it feels to look around and be disappointed in the level of support or concern from those you love. However, in the end support and love has to come from within....

I don't know the age of your toddler, but I would recommend you start early on getting her use to carrying a bag. The only reason why I say this is because my daughter, T1 for 12 years, still forgets her test kit. I know it depends on the kid, but...

Also, you can't overlap your insulin like that. That's probably why you are having lows and might still have them long after you quit dosing every hour. I think the rule is to wait 2-3 hours especially if you are taking a long acting. We wait some...

About Me

I am a mother of two Type 1 diabetic children. My daughter was diagnosed in 1997 and my son was diagnosed in February of this year. It's been pretty interesting watching the two of them. My husband and I laugh all the time about how they can have the same disease and it be so different. Actually, we laugh a lot. I am very proud to say that I am the wife and mother of some of the funniest people I know.

I currenly write two blogs. The first is my blog about moving from Seattle, WA to Auckland, New Zealand. It's the lighter side of life and shows our adventures or mis-adventures. www.porteradventures.blogspot.com

My second blog I started just recently. I started it because of going through our second indoctrination to this disease. As I sat in those education meetings, my heart just hurt for these new parents. They were scared and completely overwhelmed. It was then that I realized our family has so much to offer in the way of advice and support. Not that we are experts, but we sure know how to manage the disease and live life. The site is called The DiabeticDuo. www.thediabeticduo.com. I welcome any thoughts or comments.

Educational Web Casts

A friend of mine in the States works for a company that produces educational web casts on a variety of different health/disease topics. Patient Power is where patients can go to read, hear and see a variety of stories and gather information on just about any disease or medical issue you can think of. The site states that they are “Supported by America’s Top Medical Centers”. What I thought was interesting is that they have over 1000 patient stories. Those of us who read blogs/websites daily (I h… Continue

Kelsey the Pastry Chef

Taken from www.thediabeticduo.com

Yesterday’s conversation with Kelsey was about what schools to go to in order to become a Chef and then on to being a Pastry Chef. She has discussed this for many years and it’s where her passion lies. We have been positive and will continue to be so. We will support her through the process all the way, but does anyone else find it odd? It’s strange to me, but then I have to question myself. Why do I fin… Continue

Guilt

I wanted to expand on a topic that Kerri started on her blog today. (www.sixuntilme.com) Kerri tells of an experience where she was listening to a speaker say that when a person controls their diabetes, there are no complications. "None". Those of us with T1 or who manage kids with T1, know that isn't true. We are smart enough to know that complications arise even with the best laid plans, management, diligence and care. I do have to say though, that I agr… Continue

Marty the Contortionist

Shot Rotation, Shot Rotation, Shot Rotation…..

It only took one raised eyebrow from the Endo to get Kelsey to move her shots around. (Never mind my nagging….I have no idea what I am talking about!!) Marty is learning…and is doing a good job at moving his shots around as long as it’s covering his legs and stomach. He wants to start doing them in the back of the arms like big Sis. I just can’t go there yet…it’s not that I don’t like the arms, it’s because he is a 10 year old tall gangly boy..whos… Continue
