saying goodbye

Posted on October 15, 2012 at 11:57pm 12 Comments

My dad passed away from lung cancer on Friday morning, not long after his 70th birthday. He had quit smoking about 30 years earlier, so the cancer's cause is somewhat mysterious.

He was born and grew up under very difficult circumstances. The type of guy to always pull for the underdog, and believed in try to do the best with the hand you're dealt.

I think my D made us closer in some ways. When I was a kid, he was very involved, and took it upon himself to keep track of my…

first A1C since low carb / reduced insulin

Posted on July 28, 2012 at 10:00pm 6 Comments

It has been almost 3 months since I lowered my carb intake to ~40g / day. Once I got my basal and carb ratios figured out, I was very careful and kept tight control. For the last month, though, I have been working very long hours, not sleeping, and testing my BG usually only 1-3 times/day. I have stuck to my diet, though. My pump clogged a couple times, but I caught it, so nothing serious.

I just tested on the Bayer home A1C kit. BG at time of test was 81. My result was 6.8. I would…

ghost lows

Posted on May 9, 2012 at 1:40pm 15 Comments

So, I'm still doing well with low carb / tight control. Reading still stable, and no longer interested in eating carbs at all. I'm gradually lowering my before bed BG target. Now 140-150, along with my night time basal now .775u / hr.

My basal during the day .85u / hr holds my BG almost completely steady. However, in a couple instances, I've mysteriously dropped 20-40pts. This morning, I went to bed ~140. Woke up 62. Took a glucose tab 4g fast carb. Carb ratio of 8 is pretty accurate,…

Hi Sam! Just wanted to say that it is not perhaps our blood is thicker, but rather, is really is thicker. The dietitian called it "sticky blood". I think that happens if dehydration sets in.

Sam , your response received .Your Dad's age tooo close to mine !! ...
No , you will not skew results ...the purpose is to record as many tests as you can , so closer to the 20,000 and more $$ to those who are in need ...thanks for going for it :)

Hi Sam , from across the Line .How are you ? I read about your Dad's passing .May he rest in peace . He was too young !
Hope you are up to playing the Big Blue Test from present till November 14 , World Diabetes Day.
Only 6 more days to go - we can do this!!
We have people participating with injuries, people who can only do 5 minutes of exercise due to their health, and people doing heavy, strenuous exercise. This year there is no set time that you have to exercise to log your results.
Please encourage your families, friends, co-workers, etc. to log their exercise as well No fingerstick needed. My Hubby joins me during my daily walks .
Where else can you donate $5 to needy D organizations without taking a penny out of pocket?
I really want to see it happen. Let's get there soon!

Thanks for your participation and post the times you RUN ;)
Here a bit more information ,if you don't know what the Big BLue Test is...: If 20,000 tests are logged before November 14th, $100,000 will be donated to diabetes-related nonprofits. Last number I noticed is over 13000 .Up to Go .I hope I made it clear !The website helpful ??? http://www.bigbluetest.org/faq/ Thank you again and be well !Keep on being well...all the best , N
