Anna, I like my Ping. I did not upgrade my previous MinimedMedtronic pump until it was long past the warranty date. I had read on the British Diabetes website that you really only need a new pump once every seven years, so I waited seven years. Th...

Hi Sarah, I'm sorry to hear about the problems that the pump companies have been giving you. I agree, sometimes all the extra crap that comes along with Diabetes is almost worst than the disease itself. It's so frustrating to have to fight day an...

"The Vegan Table" has two good tempeh recipes. One of my favorite recipes in this cook book is the carmelized tempeh shawarma. As a type 1 so I can take more insulin when I "caramelize" food. This might not work for type two diabetics but maybe on...

Financial Analysis
I was diagnosed with diabetes before my fifth birthday. I was a skinny kid who fell asleep on the floor all the time in class. Being an undiagnosed diabetic made me tired all the time. During the 70s, hospitals did not know how to deal with a toddler with this diagnosis. They would give me stuff to read. How many toddlers do you know who can read? I did not know I was sick and the hospital was a horrible experience. I thought the doctors were mean. Thirty some odd years later, I still have type 1. I am on the pump and I include exercise and cooking/eating what I make usu. from scratch everyday. Most restaurants just don't know how to cook great vegan diabetic friendly food. If it doesn't taste great, why eat it unless I have a low sugar. Exercise is a must for diabetes' emotional and physical aspects. I walk my dogs 1.3 miles a everyday. I do yoga, pilates, hiking and whatever else my friends are up for. Looking forward to learning more about the people in this worldwide community of diabetics. : )

It feels like everything is going wrong today.

Sometimes it seems like diabetes is 10% of the problem and dealing with incorrect medical bills is 90% of the problem once we have reached an age where we pay our own bills. For awhile I had 2 insurances. You would not believe the billing errors when I had 2 and was not yet at an age (in U.S. usually people of 65 have two insurances) where the billers would expect that. Every procedure came with a battle. I guess no one wants to hire someone who can actually keep clean records eventhough plenty… Continue

So I actually showed at my appointment with the nutritionist. Nutrition advice different again. At least it is less complicated.

When I was dxd as a child we were supposed to eat well rounded meals with not much sugar. In my early twenties I went with the crazy idea that fat should be cut to a minimum because that was what was trendy at the time. The more fat I cut from my diet the more weight I gained and my toenails were splitting from my low fat intake. I went to another nutritionist who acted like I was crazy because I have always disliked dairy and eggs and have never been too keen on eating meat products. Yes I am a… Continue

What's for dinner?

I am going to see the nutritionist in about one and a half weeks and for the past few days I have not been keeping up my food, bolusing, etc. journal. It is going to be a chore to try to fill in all the gaps but I plan on trying to figure out what I have eaten since Halloween today. Tonight I am going to make a vegan split pea soup. I had a tempeh wrap for lunch. I have no plans for a protein exchange tonight. Hopefully if I bring a list of all the recipes I want to try to the nutrtionist, she c… Continue

Tuesday after Halloween

So many delicious, unhealthy foods available this time of year. I hope everyone indulged a little so you do not feel deprived. A busy time of year. Due to social engagements, I have not had to cook dinner for three nights. Last week I made channa masala. The left overs tasted great wrapped in a wheat tortilla with a diced cucumber, tomato and parsley salad added to this infusion style burrito. India meets Mexico meets Greek? No feta though.

What is for dinner tonight?

Good morning diabetics.
What's for dinner tonight? My vegetable delivery did not have kale or sweet potatoes available this week. Is kale a spring time vegetable in SoCal? No dill cucumber salad yesterday because the dill should flaver the cucumbers for at least 4 hours and I did not schedule enough time before dinner for that. Tonight dinner is lentil, mushroom, wild rice soup with vermouth recipe again. I also plan on the making the dill cucumber recipe for real today. Is it worth purchasing v… Continue

Thanks for getting back to me, Sarah. I've left a comment for Rebecca, so if she's not OK with using it then we won't. If we do use the photo, though, it will appear in our December issue. Just send me an e-mail (tneithercott@diabetes.org) with your mailing address and I can ship you out a copy of the issue when it prints.

Thanks! Tracey

Sarah, I'm a writer with Diabetes Forecast and in an upcoming issue we're going to be featuring Terry Keelan. A photo he submitted includes you. If we decide to use that photo, is it OK with you that your photo appear in a print and possibly online edition of the magazine?

Thanks! Tracey Neithercott

We were diagnosed almost 1 year apart, 1977 for me. Lot's of changes. My hospital experience was pretty bad and I was allergic to the animal insulin in the beginning. Now I wear the OmniPod and it's so cool to be wireless!

Nice to meet you - love the dog!
