Dear Sarah.

New York state is beautiful and had really great trout fishing back in the 60's and 70's ok even in the 80's. There were amazingly scenic rivers like the Chateaugay, Marble, Salmon. The closest we ever came to the Finger Lakes Region was Pulaski were we went pacific salmon fishing yes pacific ones that were put into the tributaries of the great lakes in the 60's and they did very well. I have been to Buffalo NY not one of the scenic spots in the old days with all the decaying industry might be better now.

When the kids were small we used to camp at Lake Meacham not far from Saranack Lake and I used to bicycle miles in the Adirondacks. Remember picking wild strawberries that were quite big up to 3/4 inch in diameter along the roads. Unbelievably munchy compared to the California mutated straw that you buy at Costco and tastes like straw.

It is hard to drive to places in Canada and America because of unbelievable distances. From Calgary you can go to Yellowstone but a grinder. Easier is Calgary to Jasper along the peaks of the Rockies super scenic mountain views. Once there accomodations are a problem since the Japanese tour buses get them all. But it might be possible to get some in the towns to the east of Jasper.

Yeah, sounds like he's going to be antsy for awhile, since he's been used to you taking him to the vet so much. Now all Pepper has to do is take it easy. Lucky guy.

Got my own kitty issues here right now - she's in heat! We'll say the dog is confused, to put it simply.

Dear Sarah.

That is great news that it is the last day of radiation therapy. Nanaimo is on the Coast of Vancouver Island and should have been much warmer when we were there as you said it has the Pacific fronts keeping the Siberian wind away. Also Calgary is at 3000 ft which makes it cooler than sea level. There was pacific rain forest along the stamp river. The ferns were doing well with no sign of frost during the winter. Was strange since there was quite a bit of snow on the ground. You are lucky to live in middle NY State instead of the Northern part which is much like Montreal a climatic hell hole except it has nicer summer weather not so scorching as the Ottawa valley. Here in Calgary it is going to be in the high 50's this week so a lot of the snow will melt. I felt quite wiped out from our trip and BP was a little high. Could be from the 2000 mile drive or we had to get used to the higher altitude here again.

I'm sure Pepper will be glad to be done! That's wonderful to hear he's doing so well. Can I have his daily schedule, though? I would love to nap in the sun all day, and curl up in warm hiding spots all night!

Thank you so much for thinking of me! I'm doing well today, although it was an overall miserable experience. I'm so glad it's over. Day surgery is supposed to be easy.

Dear Sarah.

type in google"map of washington state" and you can see a place called Nanaimo which is about 40 miles west of Vancouver. The weather was unusually bad for the place for this time of year and should be more comparable to central NY state with flowers. Here in Calgary we have two feet of snow covering a very frozen ground so no flowers for a long time also many like daffodils and tulips do not do well. We did not take pictures as neither our camera equipment nor our skills do justice to the scenery. The trees were surrealistic even the "new" growth was about 5 feet in diameter and very tall.

Dear Sarah.

We got back last evening but I was too tired to send you a message. No I did not catch any steelhead but did have one bite that I mismanaged and the hook came out. Not to worry still had a great time and the Stamp River on Vancouver Island is the most beautiful river I have ever fished and there were some really nice ones in Northern New York state. The access to the pools on the river was by paths in the rain forest with enormous ferns and no bears this time of year. Some trees were about 10 feet in diameter and could have been a thousand years old. The dog and my wife really enjoyed the walks even with the continual rain. The only day out of 5 fishing days that it did not rain heavily I fell into the river so I was wet 100% of the time. The river was in a deep canyon so we a lot of exercise to get down and up from it. I did not get a heart attack so this is great news that the ticker is still in reasonable condition. Going to the gym in the last two years also help prevent sore shoulders and back from wielding an excessively heavy fly rod. I should have taken my Loomis spey rod that is much lighter. Managed to loose 2 lb in the two weeks we were there. Too bad we could not stay longer.

It is still full blast winter here in Calgary, so much for global warming. But maybe in a week or two it will be warm enough to fly fish here. If it does not rain I may go X-country skiing this afternoon.

The dog did not enjoy his car ride. He was trembling and hyper-ventillating all the way to Vancouver a good 600 miles. then the scary diesels on the ferry. And then a cat at my sister-in-laws house that hissed and growled at him went he wanted to play.

Dear Sarah.

Sorry have not yet caught our son to send you a picture of our dog Mickey. How is pepper doing ? I heard that some friends parents have a cat with kidney problems that was greatly alleviated by getting some sort of running water pet fountain. Our dog does not drink enough. My wife is measuring and he only consumes about 375 ml per day for a 50 lb creature I am sure that I drink twice as much on a weight basis. I am not sure if running water would entice a dog to drink more, they are not so fussy as cats any puddle will do. Possibly if I feed him with a chicken of beef soup we can get more water into him.

Really depressing here super cold even for a walk. Most civilized countries have flowers comming out at this time of year. Planning to go to Vancouver Island soon will exchange the cold for rain. Hopefully not continuous. For fly fishing of the beach might not matter that much except dog will get sopping wet. It does not like water.

Not sure if we will have access to computer next week so if you don't hear don't worry.
