Hey Scott. Sorry to hear about your nephew's diagnosis. How old is he? All I can say is that I think the little kids being diagnosed now will have better treatment options and a better shot at a cure than those of us that were diagnosed a long time ago. Technology is getting better and better and there's some exciting stuff going on right now. And even if I was wrong about that, I was DX'd at 9 years old (over 28 years ago) and I've got a perfectly good happy and productive life. Look around in some of the groups on this site and you'll see people who were dx'd 20, 30, 40, even 50 years ago and they're doing just fine. My point is yeah, it's stressful and tough to see a loved one deal with this stuff, BUT HE'S GONNA BE OK, especially with the good supportive family he seems to have. Keep me posted OK?

Scott- Thanks for the add. And thanks for supporting your girlfriend with her diabetes. It's not an easy thing to deal with alone. Cheers!

Dear Friend,

I'm writing to tell you that I'll be walking in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Walk to Cure Diabetes this year, and to ask you to join me.

Taking part in the Walk is great experience. Not only will you be making a real difference in helping to find a cure that will change the lives of millions... you'll be having FUN, and getting a good workout too!

First, let me tell you a little about why this cause is so important.

Every year, more than 30,000 new cases of type 1 diabetes--the most severe form of the disease--are diagnosed in the United State alone, a large and growing percentage of them children. Day-to-day living is a challenge for people with type 1 diabetes--and multiple insulin injections are only the beginning. But what's even harder is facing the reality of the devastating complications that can stem from their condition.

As you can imagine, it's easy for people with type 1 diabetes to feel that their future is uncertain. But thanks to research funded by organizations such as JDRF, people with diabetes have a new sense of hope. Scientists have made enormous progress, and a cure for type 1 diabetes is now within reach.

That's why this is such a crucial time, and why I'm asking you to join me in walking, and raising money that will speed these scientists toward that cure. Every walker, and every dollar, brings us that much closer.

So please, come join me for this very special day... and a chance to make a real difference!

I'll be walking at Six Flags New England, Agawam, MA on October 19, 2008. You can find out more and sign up at:

Thank you,

Shary's team

HI Scott

I'm afraid I'm already doing a fund-raising event, so I can't commit to another one. How about asking folks at work, at church, or maybe even at her endo's office. Maybe she could get a small team together that way.

Don't forget to post a pointer to her fund-raising page. There are a lot of generous folks on TuDiabetes.

Welcome to the community, Scott. Your reason for being here is very sweet, very sincere. I hope you're able to find some advice for your girlfriend.

My husband has been in my life for almost three years now and has been a huge force behind my renewed commitment to better self-management. I've had diabetes since I was 10 years old. It's easy to be frustrated with it, tired of it, need a break from it. It's not until we are gently reminded of how much we have to lose that we are born again. I wish that for your girlfriend and hope she joins us here. There are plenty of people on our site that feel like she feels. The support of this community and of my loving partner have changed my life.
