Hi Yall! My name is Shawna... It's time to tell you about how I got Diabetes Type 1.. 1st thing is: My family has NO History of Type 1 Diabetes..... I had Gestational Diabetes when I was pregnant with my 2nd child. After I had her, Hayley, 4 months later I got Diabetes Type 1... I told the Doc that it can't be true cuz I wasn't 40 yet like he told me I would become a Diabetic Type 2...... I was only 22 at the time..... I had ups and downs of Diabetes.. I couldn't tell if I had a low BG... 19 months later I had my 3rd child..He was 1 month 5 days premi and had a few problems in his life....Ryan had 3 majors surgeries in his life because I didn't take care of my Diabetes.... I didn't have proper Education about Diabetes until I went to Dr. Hoffman in Wichita, Ks. That was in 1995. 3 years after I became a Diabetic with Type 1.... My oldest son, Bret, has Type 1 Diabetes for 7 years......

I'm thankful to be here today!

Posted on December 4, 2009 at 9:13am 4 Comments

I'm thankful for Bryan! He saved me the other night when my blood was 25! I was in and out of it! He made me drink 2 glasses of milk and checked my blood every 15 to 20 minutes until I came up. The next day, He ordered me some Dexcom sensors because money was tight for me right now, paying off Hayley's doctor bills, and I got them the next day! Now my Dexcom is working since I have sensors and checking my blood sugar every five minutes! It beeps at me too when I go low and high! I'm soooo happy… Continue

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas

I just found out that BCBS of Kansas is going to cover CGMS but not the sensors! Mrs Chapman from Dexcom called me to tell me that because I have BCBS of Kansas but she didn't realize that I have BCBS of Kansas Plan F as my secondary insurance since my first insurance is Medicare. So this will not help me at all. I dcided to share the information to everyone who is on tudiabetes.com and from Kansas!

Carpal Tunnel Surgery and Blood Sugars

Posted on September 15, 2009 at 9:37am 0 Comments

I had carpal tunnel surgery on the left wrist/hand on August 25th. On that day my blood sugars were alittle high like 157 before the surgery. I was glad because since I couldn't eat and my surgery wasn't until 10:15am. The rest of the day it was between 150 to 175. I thought that was good range since I had surgery that day. I didn't take any meds that they gave me a script for. I just took 3 Ibuprofen very 4 to 6 hours and had ice on my hand/wrist with a big pillow to lay hand/wrist on. I had a… Continue

There's a need but don't know what to do about it.....

Posted on July 31, 2009 at 12:02pm 1 Comment

I have a big heart for a special friend, named Chris. He's 10 years old and needs a CGMS. He has medicaid in the State of Kansas for health insurance and it doesn't pay for a CGMS. Even his doctor says that he needs one and tried to get medicaid to buy him one but they still didn't. I would like to do a fundraiser for him but I don't know what since he lives in Lawrence, Ks with his mother and I live in the southwest corner of Kansas. His grandma lives about 35 mimutes from my house. Any… Continue

Health Care

Posted on July 23, 2009 at 9:14pm 1 Comment

In 2002, I had no health care coverage. I was a single mom with two children. My medicals bills were more than what I made. I know it is hard living without health insurance. This is what I like to see on the health care bill. I think that insurances should cover everyone not just certain people in good health. We should have to pay something like $97.00 a month and have a deductible of $135.00 a year like Medicare has. Plus you pay 20% of the medical bills and 80% insurance company pays the… Continue

Shawna, I searched the site and found you when I searched about Phentermine. Then when I visited your page, I see you are a farm girl....me too!!! I'd love to chat with you and ask questions about Phentermine. My doc. recommended it tonight at my appointment and I'd like to talk to others before I try it out. She didn't tell me anything about what to do (exercise, eating, ect) when I'm on it so I'd like to talk to someone who tried it out. I'm on a pump, Type 1 since I was 16. Please add me as a friend, or drop me an email nshearer@windstream.net. Thanks!!!

Sorry I haven’t gotten back with you sooner. Everything is good here I am just trying to get this pumping thing down. I did see that they had a B.A.D. ride here. I need to get more involved with stuff around here but it just seems that I need more time. I also might be wrong but I feel that most diabetic things that people know about is type 2. I am just getting excited about hunting season around here. How long have you been diabetic with type 1, and how have things changed? Take care.

It’s nice too see someone else close by in Kansas. I just got my pump two months ago. I also think my endo (Dr. Michael) works with Dr. Hoffman. I just got diagnosed last year so far things have been good.
