Surviving

Hello All,

Well I have had diabetes for about 20 years now and let me tell you it was no walk in the park since I was diagnosed.
I suffered from "denial" for years. I knew I had to take my insulin and test my blood sugar. But I hid it from others all the time. Many to this day would never know I have diabetes. I came across a few diabetic's and well everyone is different. But I want to meet people and learn from them and just listen to those like me looking for ideas and just know how everyone… Continue

Hi Sher,

I was on Humalog and Lantus when taking injections, but switched to the pump about 3 years ago. There are mostly benefits from going to the pump with only a little bit of annoyance with the infusion sets and being "hooked up" to a device.

I will say that it's a little bit easier to control your sugar on the pump because it's convenient and easy to take insulin in small doses without having to stick yourself.

I switched to a pump because I didn't think I could break the 7 A1c mark and hit my goal of being in the 6s. I've come close, but still haven't done it yet. I would be happy to discuss this more with you if you'd like. tony@bloggingdiabetes.com.

I have a lot more real-life stories and information on my blog site. I hope this helps!

Hi Sher,
I just got started on the Omnipod pump on Friday and so far I'm loving it. Being diabetic for 27 years, I was skeptic at first about getting on the pump. I feel that I'll be able to get a tighter A1c....
Take care,
Troy

Hey, Sher!

Yeah, I was diagnosed in August, so I've only had it about 6 months. It's been a crazy 6 months! Time flies so quickly! I feel like I was just in the ICU! Anyways, over the summer, my mom noticed that I was losing weight and drinking a LOT of water. So, because she was a nurse, she knew that these were symptoms of someone in DKA. She asked a guy at our church who has type 1 to bring his testing stuff to church. He tested my blood, and I was 500 mg/dL (equal to a 23.4 mmol/l). WOAH! your BG was close to an 800 for us! Anyways, we rushed off to the emergengy room, and I got to stay in the ICU for two days. nice way to spend the last few days of summer... ha!

Well, I would HIGHLY recommend looking into a pump. Even though everything seems under control now, with shots, pumping has such amazing benefits (including healthy A1c's. mine is 5.6). I don't want to sound like I'm pushing anything on anybody, though. But... I'm so thankful for my pump, and I just want everyone to have the best way of treating their diabetes (and I DO believe that shots are what some people need... don't get me wrong!).

So, how were you diagnosed?
