I have been there with the night time highs and constant insulin giving, to the point why i couldnt figure out why i was going high but realized it had something to do with lack of sleep and stress. ugggh it is a pain, but we all have nights like ...

Sloane, you're also expecting insulin to work a lot faster than it really does, to be honest. I mean, YES, you should have been back to normal by those later tests, but you cannot expect insulin to start bringing down a high within 15 minutes. It ...

Thanks, everyone! We changed my insertion set, and the insulin, and I just tested- 89!! :)

I've leasrned over the years that there are going to be days where nothing works. But John did make a good point about the insulin maybe going bad. It's happened to me before.

Maybe your insulin is going bad? One way to test this is to give yourself a shot of insulin from another vial and see how your BG trends.

Sounds like you're having one of those bizarre, endless highs. They're so not fun, and I know how frustrating it can be. One thing I've learned is that when I'm really high, my insulin sensitivity is not as good. So, while my typical correction wi...

About me...

My name is Sloane and I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on December 11, 2008. I love to play viola and I'm in three orchestras. I foster cats for a local rescue group and love every single kitty that comes in. As of March 16, 2009, I've adopted out 4 kitties and I'm fostering one right now. I own two cats, Snowball and Mo. I have a 55 gallon fish tank and I have two huskies, Petey and Cricket. In my 55 gallon, I have African Cichlids. In the 10 gallon, I have a tropical community fish. And then in the 2.5 gallon, we have some planaria, but when they die, we're using it as a live plant area and fry raising tank. We're also doing that for the 10 gallon if those fish die, or if we need to make space in that tank and sell the tropical fish. The cats really love the tanks. I'm in 7th grade and the only one with diabetes in our school except for a little kindergarten boy who isn't in the same building. I take any chance I can to educate people about diabetes that I know. Sometimes I can use it for a school project, or it might be my facebook status. A lot of people say they learn from me. I live in Minnesota, land of the tornados and snow :). I guess you could say that I enjoy school, if that doesn't include algebra. I like sitting outside in the grass on a warm, but not too warm, day. I like sitting in trees and eating apples and reading really old books that I don't understand on a warm, but not too warm day. I'm not the type of person who enjoys being forced to run around a gym 5 times during gym class. I'd rather take my dogs for a jog and that's what I do. I don't know that I would get a cure for diabetes if I could, it's already a part of me and it's something I'm not sure I could lose. My life has already been changed... it would take a lot to change it back. I am easily aggravated by the smallest of things and sometimes this isn't a bad thing- but it mostly is.
I'm not really an ordinary girl, really anything but ordinary! :)

Endo

I went to my endo yesterday.
I can't say I'm really happy.

It went okay, and my weight is finally normal, and my a1c is good for a teen girl (7.1), but it's above what it's supposed to be and going on the pump was supposed to lower it. I'm thinking the pump needs a bit more time to adjust, but I really should be bolusing more :).

One of the things we talked about yesterday was going high right before bed, then knowing that I'll somehow be normal the next morning, and not taking a correction. I… Continue

It's been a year since those symptoms

October 24. That was a Saturday in 2008. I got an ear infection on that Saturday.

I remember being sick, waking up and my ear exploded. Getting medicine, home from school for a week. What I don't remember, but what I wish I do, is how things changed in those next few weeks. My body must have been completely hectic inside, but what I was worried about was a C on a math test or something small like that. What I imagine now is a scene from a movie- immune system fights pancreas and it's all blood… Continue

Alone

I know I'm not the only diabetic. That's pretty obvious. But at school, I'm the only one. It's not just having diabetes- it's being 13 and caring what people think of me and knowing that I have this device attached to me and the other girls don't. 8th grade is difficult, but there are so many more difficulties when you're diabetic.

I'm dealing with this strange nurse. She was having me missed 15 minutes of class in 3 classes just to test my blood sugar. Testing my blood sugar takes maybe 30 sec… Continue

School

We had a meeting with the nurse a few days ago. Our school used to be in two separate buildings across town. There was no nurse in the upper school building, where I was. There was a kindergartner in the lower building that had diabetes. Our nurse was out for a long time and we had this really weird school sub nurse. The day after I started school after diagnosis, my mom met with her and she said that she was afraid of needles and "hadn't done a shot in years". My mom decided it was better if I… Continue

Camp Needlepoint!

I just got back from Camp Needlepoint this morning! It was really amazing and awesome, really fun and just all around awesome! It was really really cool to be around other kids who actually have diabetes. Everyone in my cabin had the same pump as me and there were two other thirteen year olds and then two twelve year olds. We were all rock climbers. I don't like sports but I love rock climbing, which is kind of strange.

I got to be really really good friends with the two other thirteen year old… Continue

Hi Sloane! I just read all of your blogs and wanted to tell you how incredibly impressed I am. You are one smart lady, and I'm in awe of your adaptability to life with diabetes.

You're also an amazing writer! Have you thought of making it a career? Few have your raw talent for storytelling, and it shouldn't go to waste.

Keep it up because I really enjoy reading your blogs!

Great news Sloane!! I'm so glad that things have gotten better at school :) and that you are loving the pump. You are incredible at how well you have dealt with all the challenges of D. You should feel very proud of yourself!

You are too cute, I read your "alone" post and I almost cried. I was diagnosed at 6 almost 7 years old. I dont remember there ever being any other kids in school that was D either. But all of my friends were so jealous that I got to go eat snacks. My opinion is be strong, when others see that you can be strong and believe in yourself they wont care what that "weird" device is attached to your side.. I have been very out going with my D. I am using the pod and I stick that sucker on my arm in plain site to everyone, I do it hoping someone will ask so I can tell. Be brave and strong and always believe in yourself..

Have a great day!!!

Hi Sloane! I just came across your blog. I'm also pretty new on the pump- I got my Animas 20/20 last summer. My blood sugar was awesome at first, but it got consistently crazier and crazier as time wore on. Now my pump is a little disappointing... I need to do basal and insulin sensitivity testing to change my pump settings, which is SUCH a drag!! How's your pump treating ya now?
I love the pump at school. I used to take out my syringes and do shots in front of everyone, but now I can just poke around on my pump and take insulin without anyone complaining. Did you know they tried to ban me from doing tests or taking insulin in class??? And some classes were like, 2 or more hours long!!!!! OMG!!!!!! HOW NASTY!!!!!!!!!
