Hi Allen, A good summary of this pilot project is presented in a poster on The Credit Valley Hospital pilot project "Supporting Diabetes Self-Care Through a Wireless Program". This poster was accepted for presentation at the Canadian Diabetes As...

Steve, Is there a white paper or journal article you can point me to regarding the cellphone trial? I would be interested in looking at it. 20 participants isn't bad. It's 20 more than I knew existed before! Allen

Hi Allen, Good question, the idea is to provide this free of charge to the participant except for the cell phone data charges. As background, in the pilot projects each participant was responsible for paying for his/her cell phone data charges. F...

Hi Steve.
I think this is a great idea that you have, any way to control A1C's is great.
Have you looked at the Ontario gov. Diabetes reg to see if you could link that to what you are working on??

I saw in your posting that there was no cost to us for the cell program what about the healt care team??

I would like to get more info on what you are doing ( were you are going with this projet. please keep us infromed.

Thanks
Greg

Hi Kristin,

Thank you for your kind greeting.

I would be please to answer your question. I have two connections to diabetes:

1) Working with others, I collaborate in the development and pilot of a wireless diabetes program to help improve / maintain sugar control among people with diabetes. Please let me explain, after taking a sugar reading (using the glucose meter,) this reading is then entered into their cell phone. These readings can be transmitted (using a clinical privacy protocol) and read by their healthcare professional (or others i.e. caregiver). If required the healthcare professional can transmit feedback back to the cell phone. In one pilot 20 patients were able to use their own cell phones and the diabetes educators / nurses captured the data and provided feedback using Bayer’s win GLUCOFACTS® software. At the completion of the pilot eighteen patients reduced their A1Cs

2) Another area is collecting data for healthcare market research. Using the internet, online surveys are programmed and data is collected for market researchers. One area I’m investigating is the best way to reach out to social networks focused on disease states (i.e. diabetes) to participate in these studies, determine the appropriate privacy measures, and find ways to contribute back to the social network and its members.

I hope this helps

Steve
