About Me

Diagnosed with T2 in 1978, at 28 years of age. Rediagnosed in Feb 2009 as LADA (T1.5) or Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adulthood. My marker was a positive GAD Antibody test, which had never been tested before. C-Peptide is also now below normal but still above zero at 0.1 (LOL). Maybe I have the longest LADA honeymoon I've ever heard or read about.

On insulin the last 4 years. Started because I couldn't tolerate the oral meds. Hoping to go on a pump soon. UPDATE: Am now on an Animas 2020 since June 1, 2009. Loving it like crazy!!

I recently remarried in 2008. I'm Jewish, born in Australia with a European background. My husband is Muslim from Iran. Are we doing our bit for Middle East relations? I hope so.

I have one delightful daughter, who is 20 this year (2009). We have a Border Collie named Charly who is very sweet and gentle. Charly used to be part of a larger menagerie including my two Springer Spaniels who died in early 2007, and my daughter's dog Honey, who died in 2006. We also have a 14 year old Somali Abyssinian cat, who we've had since he was a kitten.

We live 2 streets from the beach in a very popular tourist town and we love the laid-back, sub-tropical lifestyle. Very different to my hometown of Sydney.

I'm an IT Consultant and I volunteer with several organisations including, Insulin for Life, admin for 2 internet support lists for Lupus, secretary/treasurer for a local community organisation and more... and I love it all.

Having looked around this site for a while, I finally joined. It's a great site, with some fantastic facilities. UPDATE: Wow, a truly useful site with great resources and wonderful people!

So Susi - aren't we lucky to be owners of a Animas 2020? I sometimes think I'm blessed being able to afford one. Not sure what will happen when I'm no longer working - trying not to think that far - but it's in about 8 years. I guess I should start to buy lottery tickets or hope the province I live in does what other Canadian provinces have done - pay for pumps! Do you have anything like that in Australia - where each state has different medical coverage?

hi, susi, I was just reading the NYTimes, and a very disturbing story about one of the protesters who was imprisioned and tortured was in the first section. He was raped and beaten so badly. I thought I'd send you the link to it - here - rather than on Twitter. We are hoping for progress in Iran...

Hey Susi....thought I'd drop in here and say hello (can't get on your tu.face page for some reason)...and in answer to your question, born and bred in Canada. Childhood in Quebec, French being my first language, moved to Ontario at 11. Love your "made in Chicago".

Susy,

The reason you'd want your daughter to know is that eating a lower carb diet when young and avoiding things, like prednisone, that could significantly worsen control, permanently, might lead to much better control life-long.

Also, if she has something borderline, she is likely to become diabetic within weeks of becoming pregnant, but doctors don't test for gestational diabetes until many months after a pregnancy begins because in Type 2s it takes months to develop. I became diabetic immediately after conceiving and gained almost 60 lbs by 4 months. This wasn't good for my babies, but no one understood what was going on. Because my daughter and her ob/gyn know she already has an abnormality, if she gets pregnant she'll go on insulin immediately, which will be much safer.

Susi,

My guess is that there are many more of us misdiagnosed as Type 2 who aren't. I was diagnosed as "pre-diabetic" in 1978 when I weighted 108 lbs and went on to have two diabetic pregnancies but no one ever considered that I wasn't "classic type 2" until they finally put me on insulin and I was hypoing on tiny doses.

You might suggest your kids get tested. My 26 year old daughter has elevated post-meal blood sugars in the "pre-diabetic" range despite being ferociously fit so I'm pretty sure she has what I have too.

Hello Susi, am I glad while daily surfing this website, as a insulin-dependent since1977,a ROLE MODEL tp over 40,000 and counting, and a computer rookie,I found out about INSULIN FOR LIFE, and how a similar program be set up here in TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, where INSULIN was discovered by BANTING & BEST JULY 30 1921. This day,to show my appreciation for being alive, because of INSULIN, On JULY 30, I will be calling insulin-users, worldwide, and asking them to join me,in silence, and give THANKS for this CANADIAN "miracle" giving thousands of millions of us a healthy lifestyle. The AMIGOS will be selling BLUE ROSES to raise funds for www.restorethebantinghomestead.com This flower was chosen as our motto, because one of its meaning is "ATTAINING THE IMPOSSIBLE" This day INSULIN APPRECIATION DAY,we hope will be an annual day celebrated worldwide. I like the idea of INSULIN FOR LIFE, and it would fit in well with the mosaic population of 170 nationalities and languages. My personal contact with the BANTING family started in 1978. i have a program you might try in AUSTRALIA, it is called AMIGOKIT, I ask diabetics to call 5 DIABETICS, EVERYDAY, it willsolve 2 purposes, let someone know you CARE, and could SAVE A LIFE, and tell the 5 to call 5 diabetics, this could be a part of a diabetes social group. Keep In Touch. I am 91 and still trailblazing. clarence.haynes@sympatico.ca

Hooked up and flying! (Animas 2020)

Pump-start day yesterday!!! All went very smoothly. Out to dinner last night. BGLs really great, but some tweaking of basals probably in store next week. Even got the software to work on Vista (the Australian version isn't supposed to). Downloaded the pump data. Site change & refill today with the rep and handed in the reports from the downloaded data - less than 24 hours worth (LOL). Off to breakfast in town. So easy to bolus! Learning to trust what the pump tells me to do.

Am so loving th… Continue

Well on the Road...

I'm now well on the road to my pump start date of early June. The Animas 2020 was ordered and it's still the one I want.

I tossed up between the pink and the black, and despite urging from others to go with the pink, I went for the black. What did I say to someone? Oh yeah... I'm not sure I like the idea of looking like an elephant in drag with a pink pager hanging off me.

Black is far more sedate and serious. Not that I'm either. And I don't mind wearing it in a pocket or outside my clothing.… Continue

Insulin for Life

In a reply to someone eles's post, I supplied some info about Insulin for LIfe. Thought I'd repeat the info here...

I am involved with Insulin for Life, whose headquarters are here in Australia.

Insulin for Life Australia is a not-for-profit organisation that collects and distributes insulin and other diabetes supplies that would otherwise be wasted. These are sent as a result of emergencies, and also on an ongoing, sustainable basis to recogn… Continue
