Congrats on getting the restroom key. I don't think they'll take it away soon. Liked your blog and enjoyed your '50 things' book, too. Keep up the good work. Terry

Yes. If I'm over 165 at bedtime,I'll bolus. If I'm high in the middle of the night, I'll bolus. I've never heard that advice that your nurse gave. I don't see any sense in it. It's not as if 'processing glucose' requires any physical exertion. Isn'…

Diabetes has bin berry berry good tu me.

In many ways, diabetes has been very, very good for me. Before I was diagnosed at age 48 I smoked a pack of cigarettes a day, ate whatever was handy, fell asleep at my desk after lunch, neglected my teeth, my eyes, my feet and any other thing it is unhealthy to neglect.
Since I was diagnosed I quit smoking after 32 years, I exercise 30 minutes a day, I ran two marathons, two half-marathons, I changed my diet (for the better), I know what my cholesterol, trygliceride, bp, heart rate and a variety of other numbers are and I know what they mean, I can read and understand a food label, I can divide by 15, I sleep like a baby, I feel in control of my life.

I'm not always IN control, I just feel in control. Usually. And I know how to take control if things start to spin wildly away.

So, diabetes has bin berry, berry good tu me!

Two useful phrases (thanks to UKCD aka Fiona) for use with people who blurt out thoughtless comments about diabetes:

"There are a lot of myths around the subject of diabetes"

"There are no dietary restrictions, although food intake has to be managed but I won't go into that as it is very complex."

A Fib. No lie.

There are runs where you feel invincible. Your legs spin as if attached to a wheel. Your feet feel as if they’re barely touching the ground. Every part of your body is working together in perfect harmony and unison; arms, torso, legs, lungs, heart.

Until they’re not.

Your legs are like wooden posts, your breath is labored, your heart races, but you can’t keep up with it. The synchronism that suffused your body moments ago is 50 feet behind you, gasping for breath. You slow down and let it catc… Continue

Latest Marathon Adventure - Long Beach 2009

Part of the fun of running in a marathon, especially one as large at Long Beach with some 20,000 entrants, is the variety of people and characters you run with along the way. The course in Long Beach is very flat, with only three or four uphills, each very moderate. For that reason it's inviting to a lot of newcomers. For that reason it’s also quite humbling for someone like me who runs a lot. Being passed by a woman who is half your height and twice your width has a way of leveling your ego, an… Continue

My Diabetes, My Friend?

(This was inspired, in part, by dino's blog "I'm putting down the gloves" http://tudiabetes.com/profiles/blogs/im-putting-down-the-gloves and a few other sources, particularly a cold turkey quit smoking site that has been very supportive for me.)

Is this how a friend treats you?

This friend comes to live in your house. You didn’t invite him. He has no job. He has no money. He has no clothes. He has no visible means of support. But you can’t kick him out. Why? Because he’s Type 1 diabetes and h… Continue

Adventures with the “tuDiabetes meet-up”

I arrived at the Omellette Parlor in Santa Monica about 15 minutes late. Possibly later, because I parked so far away. I was trying to find Sarah and Rebecca, who I knew only from their messages on tuDiabetes and the pictures in their profiles. How hard could it be?

Confoundingly hard, in fact. It was only the day before that I confirmed that I’d attend the meet-up, arranged by Rebecca. But I didn’t have a phone number for either of them and for some reason, neither of them dressed in the same… Continue

A Teaching Moment - Time to Act Up

Every Monday morning my co-employees and managers gather in the conference room to review the week's production schedule. Each Monday for the past year one person has been assigned to give a brief presentation on a topic of their choice. People have sung songs, recited poems, given slide shows of their recent trips or photography, lectured on a topic of interest to them, and all kinds of things. Today was my turn.

I decided to combine two of my favorite subjects - diabetes and geekdom.

I threw… Continue

Bernstein in his web casts has talked about just not stopping Statins or Aspirin once started. According to him your chances are 3 times greater getting a stroke with aspirin and 3 times greater with a statin getting a cardiac event. Sorry cant cite the study, but I remember him saying it. Talk with your Dr further . I am on aspirin and now will just not quit it. Thought I would send you note. Take care good luck

Thank you Terry and congratulations on your Active Lifestyle award as well. I really find it inspirational that you run full and half marathons. For years after diagnosis I was on slower insulin (Acctrapid). During this time intense sport was nearly unthinkable for me. But with NovoLog this changed fundamentally. I workout on two days a week for 60 minutes and this alone has increased my quality of life very much. A happy new year 2010 to you and your family.
