Diabetes has bin berry berry good tu me.

In many ways, diabetes has been very, very good for me. Before I was diagnosed at age 48 I smoked a pack of cigarettes a day, ate whatever was handy, fell asleep at my desk after lunch, neglected my teeth, my eyes, my feet and any other thing it is unhealthy to neglect.
Since I was diagnosed I quit smoking after 32 years, I exercise 30 minutes a day, I ran two marathons, two half-marathons, I changed my diet (for the better), I know what my cholesterol, trygliceride, bp, heart rate and a variety of other numbers are and I know what they mean, I can read and understand a food label, I can divide by 15, I sleep like a baby, I feel in control of my life.

I'm not always IN control, I just feel in control. Usually. And I know how to take control if things start to spin wildly away.

So, diabetes has bin berry, berry good tu me!

Two useful phrases (thanks to UKCD aka Fiona) for use with people who blurt out thoughtless comments about diabetes:

"There are a lot of myths around the subject of diabetes"

"There are no dietary restrictions, although food intake has to be managed but I won't go into that as it is very complex."

Latest Marathon Adventure - Long Beach 2009

Part of the fun of running in a marathon, especially one as large at Long Beach with some 20,000 entrants, is the variety of people and characters you run with along the way. The course in Long Beach is very flat, with only three or four uphills, each very moderate. For that reason it's inviting to a lot of newcomers. For that reason it’s also quite humbling for someone like me who runs a lot. Being passed by a woman who is half your height and twice your width has a way of leveling your ego, an… Continue

My Diabetes, My Friend?

(This was inspired, in part, by dino's blog "I'm putting down the gloves" http://tudiabetes.com/profiles/blogs/im-putting-down-the-gloves and a few other sources, particularly a cold turkey quit smoking site that has been very supportive for me.)

Is this how a friend treats you?

This friend comes to live in your house. You didn’t invite him. He has no job. He has no money. He has no clothes. He has no visible means of support. But you can’t kick him out. Why? Because he’s Type 1 diabetes and h… Continue

Adventures with the “tuDiabetes meet-up”

I arrived at the Omellette Parlor in Santa Monica about 15 minutes late. Possibly later, because I parked so far away. I was trying to find Sarah and Rebecca, who I knew only from their messages on tuDiabetes and the pictures in their profiles. How hard could it be?

Confoundingly hard, in fact. It was only the day before that I confirmed that I’d attend the meet-up, arranged by Rebecca. But I didn’t have a phone number for either of them and for some reason, neither of them dressed in the same… Continue

A Teaching Moment - Time to Act Up

Every Monday morning my co-employees and managers gather in the conference room to review the week's production schedule. Each Monday for the past year one person has been assigned to give a brief presentation on a topic of their choice. People have sung songs, recited poems, given slide shows of their recent trips or photography, lectured on a topic of interest to them, and all kinds of things. Today was my turn.

I decided to combine two of my favorite subjects - diabetes and geekdom.

I threw… Continue

The 2008 Long Beach Half Marathon

I finished the Long Beach Half Marathon in 2:31:22 today, a mere 1:22 off my goal, so I am very pleased. It was also an interesting day for my blood sugars, so I thought I’d tell you how it went.

On background, I’m a 51 year old Type 1, diagnosed in January 2003, on insulin since 2004 and on a MiniMed pump since 2005. I have a Dexcom CGM, but didn’t wear it during the race.

Woke up this morning at 5:30 am with a BG of 315. WTF!!!???? That came out of the blue. I was running a little high bef… Continue

Terry thanks for all the awesome comments. My wife loves your video too. I had to show her your taste video... I love the Cardboard gag with the lettuce! So funny and true! You should upload that video on www.1HappyDiabetic.com we would love to have you there!

I haven't done any work on the taste video. Nothing's clicking for me and time's running out. Please go ahead with your idea without me.

I see you've put some thought into this. Both are good ideas. I'm trying to imagine the collaboration process. It's a problem because I use an SD camera and a PC. But it's not a huge problem since the QT .mov format is universal.
The Chef one would require an extensive script and dialog for several people. And since I never watch that show, I wouldn't be much help.

The 2nd one seems more doable and might be easier to merge the content from two independent sources.
You're right, coming up with bad taste items is much easier. Bad Taste:
1) Dropping your pants at the company Xmas party, bending over and asking your boss to give you a shot.
2) Telling an overweight diabetic, "You're too fat to be a Type 1."

I think you could do the entire thing just with bad taste items. The one problem I have is this type of taste is not really a sense like sight and hearing are. But then again, nobody will care.

Here's MY one idea for a video: Instead of show on wine tasting, some idiot is doing insulin tasting. For example, he squirts some in his mouth from a syringe and boasts, "The 2007 Humalog is a fine vintage. It has an initial taste of cherry and nutmeg, but finishes with sweet apricot. It goes well with strawberry glucose tablets."
Although now that I've written it out, it seems pretty lame.
Those are my thoughts.

Sure I'm interested. I'm just finishing up my video on smell so I can spend the next 5 days working with you. However, I'll be out of town the 26th through the 30th... so my part would have to finish up by the 25th. Will that work?

Hi Terry!! tks about your comment about my video!! ;-) I read your profile and felt happy that diabetes was "berry berry good to you", it has been good to me also... you had a great insight, because just as you, even if it sounds controversial, I feel healthier because I´m diabetic. Oh, and saw your pictures... You´re on shape!! Congrats dear! lets keep in touch...

It would be great to run in one of Baltimore's races with you, Terry. I'm currently using my 15 y/o daughter (who runs cross country) as a "chase rabbit", and we could very well target the St. Patty's day 5k as a team! B-more also has a full marathon that gets bigger every year. They just had it, and I believe there were some 20,000 runners. Under Armour (who is headquartered locally) is among the big sponsors of the race. By the time I'm ready to take on a marathon, it will probably have become quite well-known so maybe you'll be in town for that event as well.

I've managed to eliminate my dependence on insulin & 6 other diabetes meds via exercise. I try to picture myself running away from a syringe ... that seems to keep me motivated for now! But I'm always up for ANY new hints, motivational or otherwise. After all, I am no longer a "spring chicken" and if I don't do this with some degree of intelligence I WILL sideline myself! I hope you won't mind too much if I occasionally contact you for advice and/or info.

And, until I'm actually running the races I've currently got in my sights ... I'll just live them vicariously through you! Thanx again, Terry for your time, info & support. and, keep up the great job!

Take care.

I ran as a young woman, but lost it along the way. I'm literally just now getting back into it, started walking in Feb., lost 50 # since and am now moving from just walking into walking/running. I'm at about the 50/50 point right now, so couldn't hold a candle to you at present. But, I'm a pretty stubborn woman so you should look out for me in another 18 months or so! :]
My game plan is 5k's this spring, 1/2 marathons by spring 2011 and marathons by spring 2012. Sound like a reasonable schedule to you or am I just dreaming the sweet dreams of the uneducated here?

Thank you, Terry. Actually, I've already joined that group and am running and reading as much as I can! I'll pick up a copy of the book, too. Thank you very much! How long have you been running?
