Lessons from world diabetes day

Diabetes Awareness vs Education

Nov the 14th was world diabetes day for those who already do not know and I was not surprised by how much communities and individuals do to commemorate the day. I wish it would have gotten me off work but boss wasn't buying my schtick about it being important to me than thanksgiving and the other holidays.

One of the reason's we celebrate world diabetes day is to raise awareness to the disease and at this point in the journey we cannot deny that diabetes awarene… Continue

The Poor Diabetic

Diabetes has made me frugal but I am not cheap

I was never a coupon clipper, until I became a diabetic. It started with test supplies and pharmacy coupons for my metformin. Strolling the internet for deals and anything I can find to save me money, believe me I was never like this and being a single young guy in my early 30's, some of my friends who don't know me very well tend to give me those funny looks when I pull my stack of coupons when I shop for groceries or pay for my meds but at this point I don'tcare.

There is a fine line between… Continue

Your so very welcome. Hope things are going well for you, we all need to pull thru for each other in this time of hardship. Just found out by Dec. Ist, I won't be having health insurance thru my job. Praying for a miracle.

Hi Ronald,

I am a T1 diabetic of 26 years who has been blessed with fantastic insurance at times and none at all several times as well. I tell my non-diabetic friends that diabetes is a very expensive hobby. They laugh, but it's really true. Right now I have insurance so I have it relatively well. I would like some feed-back from you, if you would be so kind.

This Monday morning I meet with a director of community health centers to propose a fund limited to free testing supplies for under-income, under-insured diabetics. I have found that diabetics shouldered with all the stresses that come with being broke tend to all but eliminate testing over time. It's not right and I feel that as a diabetic I should help them get the supplies they need. But it's deeper than just the supplies themselves. The mere fact that other people, especially other diabetics, care enough to try to keep you well may be what it takes to set that person on a life-long path of self-care.

In time I would like to see scholarships of testing PLUS diabetic education PLUS some family counseling... but that's for a day and time down the road.

Thanks for listening. Have a great weekend.

It doesn't hurt to be frugal.I have insurance with copays and I still use coupons.(My test strips comes with coupons.) When I go to the local stores,I always look for the "buy one get one free" deals or I buy generic.Sometimes I can't find some carb friendly items.Cheaper is almost always better!
