You live close enough to Chicago that if we have a Chicago get together, it might be around you - join the great lakes group.

OMG D. Nash. That must have been so scary. I am glad you found this site too. I have seen many babies be put on pumps and do just fine. Glad your son has one. It was the best decision I have ever made in my life.

Hi, Iam so excited I found this web site. Its not easy to find information on toddlers with type 1. I was so excited to see a parents of type 1 group. My son Patrick is 2 1/2 years old and was diagnosed 9/18/06 he was only 18 mo. I took him to the Dr. because he was very lethargic and not eating. My Dr. must have suspected because they tested him immediately and told me he was a diabetic. I almost passed out, I was 2 mo. pregnant and very scared. The Dr. called an ambulance to take him to Ronald McDonald Childrens hospital. WHile we waited for the ambulance they tried numerous times to get an IV started but he was just to dehydrated. The hospital had a pediatric team waiting for us in the emergency room, and they were able to get an iv started. They admitted him to icu where he was constantly watched. Patrick had so many tubes and lines hooked up to him, it was hard to watch but I never left him. Patrick was kept asleep while they tried to bring down his sugar, if it would come down too fast they will give him glucose. We were there for a whole week. Felt like a year. The Dr. & Nurses were amazing, I cannot express in words how much I thank God for their servies/talents. They saved my sons life. I am so glad they knew what was wrong and could begin treatment. I just kept telling him how much I loved him and that as soon as he got better we were going to go home. Well, a week later all the iv's came out and the nurse tured to me and said you can take him home, as long as you show me you can load and needle and give him a shot. OMG I couldnt believe I had to do this. But I promised my son when he got well I would bring him home and I was not going to hold things up. I was so scared. I tried to put thing im perspective, I need to do this. This will keep him healthy. If I dont do this I will be hurting him. I said a prayer for strength and proved to his nurse that I could do this. Were going home. I wanted to take Patrick home so badly that it didnt occur to me that I was leaving ALL the medical help/support we were getting. My husband and I were now in charge. We werent medically trained, what if we missed something. Well it will be 1 yr on Sept. 18 and so far we have done alright. Since being diagnosed Patrick has been growing like a weed, and his AK1 # has come down the last two times. We have had a couple of scares but nothing that has not been taken care of at home. Patrick was put on the Animas pump Dec 7, 2006. At first I hated it. I missed the Lantus at night. I cant count the times I wanted to take it off him. Lots of scaresfor the first 2 mo. till we got the ratio's worked out. Im glad I stuck with it. Its one stick every 3 days and he does wonderful on it. I cant imagine life without it, untill he is cured of course. Patrick is a big brother now to my 3 mo. old son Michael. I was worried how I was going to handle Patrick and a baby. Geez he is still a baby, but he is soo good with him. Life is good. I look forward to reading all your stories and tips.
