This one happened just yesterday at the local Veterans Affars Hospital in Durham, NC. I was deep into an involved discussion about why some of the VA hospitals cover CGMS for their patients, and others won't even give a monitor to Type IIs. Long s...

I've heard it, but it makes me testy. FWIW, I'm 5'10" and 150 lbs. When I was diagnosed at age 30 with Type I, I was a sentinel at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington Cemetery. Suffice it to say, I don't fit the stereotype I used to have for wha...

You know, now that I think about it, not long after the "Big D" arrived, I had a similar series of dreams that lasted a couple of months. At the time, I was in the Army. I used to dream I was back in Somalia (in the middle of a firefight) and I ha...

I feel so different! Diabetes is in my dreams A LOT. I was only diagnosed 6 months ago...maybe it's because of the newness that enters my subconscious? My dreams are never about diabetes-symptoms or even food related. What I do dream about is (1)...

Great story, but sad. Part of the problem is the stereotype that the medical community and media perpetuate: diabetes is a disease for fat, old or old and fat people - and occasionally little kids. The ADA doesn't do much to dispel the notion. Alo...

Diabetes is never a part of my dream, I'm always free of the pump and meter. Although when I'm going really low during the night, my dreams are really disjointed, paranoid and crazy. Fortunately, I still wake up when I'm low. Curious observation.

Halloween: Diabetes Hell Night?

Shopping for candy isn't something I normally do - except for buying chocolate for my bride. But every year on our anniversary (Oct 30) I usually pick up a bag or two for the trick or treaters. I don't give much thought to the irony of a Diabetic poring over all the possibilities in the candy aisle. It is one of those chores that just have to be done. I try to focus on the spirit of giving, the fun I had on Halloween and great memories of growing up. But this year I wasn't feeling all that hot,… Continue

Cool Diabetes Toys - Where Are They Now?

I saw a picture here of what looked like a glucose meter with a USB jack poking out the side. So I opened it up, and sure enough a glucose manufacturer has had one out since September! Where was I? So anyway, I took a look at it on www.engadget.com. As is often the case with web surfing, I clicked on "diabetes" there and saw loads of other really cool toys for the sugar enhanced. It is at http://www.engadget.coContinue

A revealing hospital visit

There I was - tanking like mad last night. It seemed that each glucose tab was sending my BG lower instead of the other direction. First 60, then 47 - then 39. I was starting to lose it, and when my wife took another reading and it was 27, she asked if I wanted to go to the hospital. I replied "call the meat wagon." They arrived within minutes, hooked me up to an IV as we bumped on down the road. They wheeled me through the ER doors - crowded with the 10:00pm flu and sniffles crowd. So far there… Continue

Battling the VA: Success!

There I was, surrounded by the enemy, knee deep in bandoliers, grenade pins everywhere, and then things got ugly.

Oops - that is how good war stories start. Actually, this post is about a different battle: fighting the Veterans Administration to have my disability rating increased since my initial award of 20% for diabetes back in '94.

About two years ago I reopened my claim to obtain consideration for the worsening of my diabetes and to include complications that have affected me since then.… Continue

Battling the Veterans Administration

I was an active duty soldier when I was diagnosed with Type I in 1994. Seven months later I was given a disability discharge and filed a claim with the VA. In just 3 months they decided my claim and awarded me a 40% rating (20% for diabetes). Since then, I've developed several typical complications, including neuropathy (both peripheral and autonomic), cardiovascular disease (with a heart attack at age 43 in 2006), gastroparesis and other things. As a result, I reopened my claim, asking that the… Continue

wow! I grew up in Alex, near Del Ray. I went to St. Agnes School. that is such a riot. We lived in Edmond and Norman for a few years when my husband was working for a company called United Design in Norman. I really loved my endo there, Dr. Draelos in OKC. We are now about 1.5 hours west of NYC.

hey Tom,

I had to fight for nearly 2 years durring my PEB. I was lucky and got a lot of support from my command. That combined with getting very good control over my diabetes helped. It almost didn't turn out this way but I requested a formal hearing and the day before I was to fly out I got the finding of fit to continue service.

Things are slowly changing for service members. I have met 2 other Marines with type 1 so far. As long as you are in control and it doesn't prevent you from doing your job (I am a Radar Tech) they will keep you.
