I'm not "Diabetic" - I'm a "DiabetesSurvivor!"

Posted on May 24, 2012 at 7:45am 5 Comments

Diabetic. Insulin Dependent. Type I or Type II. Brittle. MODY. People (or Person) With Diabetes or PWD in this abbreviation crazed era.

I don't like being labeled when that only describes part of who I am. One thing that annoys me about these labels assigned to my pancreatically challenged life is that they are too clinical and don't describe the daily battles I fight. Ever notice how at any fundraising event for cancer that survivors are trotted out and celebrated? Their courage is…

Progress in Perspective

Posted on March 21, 2012 at 12:05pm 2 Comments

When it comes to living with Type I Diabetes I'm impatient and frustrated. Since my first insulin shot in 1994 I've looked every day for the announcement for a cure. Sheila Thorne lived with it for over 80 years - receiving her first shot from the discoverer of insulin.

Before Dr. Frederick Banting made his Nobel Prize winning discovery a diagnosis of diabetes meant death - either from starvation or hyperglycemia. Luckily for Sheila Thorn, she was taken to see the pioneering doctor…

Fewer Amputations=Good News

Posted on February 1, 2012 at 12:30pm 3 Comments

Amputation. Scared yet? It was probably one of the first words you heard when you were told you had diabetes.

Since day one in my life with Diabetes it has been drilled into my head to "check your feet daily." Never, ever go barefoot. Not once - and I haven't except for the bathtub since January 10, 1994. With the risk that we have for poor circulation and nerve damage we might not notice, coupled with an impaired ability to heal normally, it is good advice. Something as simple as a…

New to this site and lovin it. VA pump user so far they have been very good to me in my treatment and I feel very blessed to have a 722 w/cgm at times it is very painful injecting the sensor but very well worth it. Never could come down from the 11's but with cycling and the cgm I am now at 8 on my A1C working with doctors to get it lower withing the next three months.

wow! I grew up in Alex, near Del Ray. I went to St. Agnes School. that is such a riot. We lived in Edmond and Norman for a few years when my husband was working for a company called United Design in Norman. I really loved my endo there, Dr. Draelos in OKC. We are now about 1.5 hours west of NYC.

hey Tom,

I had to fight for nearly 2 years durring my PEB. I was lucky and got a lot of support from my command. That combined with getting very good control over my diabetes helped. It almost didn't turn out this way but I requested a formal hearing and the day before I was to fly out I got the finding of fit to continue service.

Things are slowly changing for service members. I have met 2 other Marines with type 1 so far. As long as you are in control and it doesn't prevent you from doing your job (I am a Radar Tech) they will keep you.
