Dear Diabetes...You Suck!

Posted on March 29, 2010 at 7:43am 2 Comments

It amazes me how many people are uneducated about diabetes. While out in public the other day it was time for a dose of insulin. I went into the bathroom and began to inject my insulin when a mother and her little girl walked in. First, I was given a look like I was a druggie and then she hurried her daughter into the bathroom stall. When they came out I was then checking my blood sugar level on my monitor and I think that she then realized that I was a diabetic. I was just feeling thankful…

Faux Pas

I understand that there are a lot of people who are not educated about diabetes but come on! One of the most annoying things I have heard since I was diagnosed is "you have diabetes? Oh my grandpa has diabetes and he had to have both of his legs amputated." Major FAUX PAS!

Just like every non-diabetic is different, every diabetic is also different. Just because your brother, or you mama, or your daddy's mama, or your mama's mama, or your…

The start of a new beginning

Posted on March 15, 2010 at 2:30pm 0 Comments

My name is Kimberlee and I was 23 years. I am now 21 days old. How is that you ask? Well, I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 21 days ago. I am taking this diagnosis as a new beginning for me. I am educating myself daily, in hopes that I will be benefit from it.

So, how am I doing as a baby Type 1? Well, I guess you could say that I am managing. I am trying to take it day by day and not worry about the future, but I am the type of person…

I just saw your post about getting your PING -- you're going to love it! I got it because it is waterproof too. I like to swim and it has always worked just fine in the water. One thing that I have noticed is that in a heated pool sometimes I find my BGs drop after I get out now that i have the pump. So just make sure you have a snack until you get used to how to set your pump for swimming. You can program a basal rate just for that.

I don't think ppl know what we have to do every day and how we have to do it. I try and give ppl an out with that. I took Type 1 in 73. OH God was I very off. Ppl didn't want to be around me b/c they could catch it! They didn't understand! Me with my limited understanding at the time felt so alone but now with this site we have a place to go and talk to other's like us! I had 1 friend from 5th to 9th grade who stood by myside and told me she cared about me. Now with 2 grown kids and the grandmother of 3 I always look back on her and say thanks! She was the "nerd" at school but knew how to be a friend when all my so called friends run as far as they could! I went to a small counrty school with only 350 students from k-12. I was the only diabetic there or even in that small town! We have to be srtong for folks that don't "get it" HANG IN THERE MY FRIEND YOU CAN AND WILL DO IT!!!!!

I read your blogs today. As a Type 1 who was diagnosed at 23, it was liking hearing my own thoughts 12 years later. It does get easier, it always has sucky moments and you will find the tips and tricks that work for you. All those "helpers" really do ease up eventually, some just take longer than others.

I READ YOUR BLOG TODAY! Many of us have these feelings wheather you have been doing this for 1 year or 40 years. Planning will be a major part for the rest of your life. But one day it will be a little less noticable. Hey, I'm from Ocala..... about 10 years ago. Just recently visited friends there. My daughter use to work at Munroe Regional
